FAQ - Warrior Youth Basketball
1. What is the difference between Travel basketball & Recreational basketball?
Travel basketball is a more competitive and higher skill level league than Recreational basketball. Half of Travel games are played away on weekends against other school districts in York County. There are two Travel leagues - an A League and a B League for all levels of Travel. The A League is the highest level and most competitive where league standings are kept. The B League is a slightly lower level of Travel basketball than the A League but the rules are modified to allow for a more controlled development of basketball and league standings are not kept. Both Travel and Recreational basketball require tryouts or evaluations for team placement. The Recreational basketball program consists of teams from SYC and Southeastern that will play themselves and each other. The games are played in Southern York County School District & Southeastern School District gyms.
2. What happens if I register my player for Travel Basketball but they do not make the team?
Depending on the skill level of your player and the number of teams available for the season, cuts may need to be made. In the event that your child does not qualify for the Travel program this year following tryouts, they will automatically be placed on an available Recreational team and the price difference in registration fee will be refunded to you.
3. When do Travel basketball practices and games begin?
Practices begin in November and are held at various Southern York County School District Gyms. There are two Travel basketball practices per week nights. Games begin the first weekend of December.
Practice times vary by teams and age groups. Most practices are between 1-1 1/2 hours long. The earliest a practice could begin is 6 PM. The latest a practice could end is 9 PM. We make every effort to schedule the 3rd - 4th grade practice times early, and the older age groups later. You will receive notification from your coaches about practice days/times the first week of November.
4. Where can I find league rules and regulations?
For Travel, we have partnered with the York-Adams Youth Basketball league. If you would like a breakdown of the various league and division rules, please request a copy of the rules from your player's coach. Keep in mind that both the Recreational and Travel leagues have varying rules depending on the division. In a effort to foster continued learning, growth and play, traditional rules involving for example basic fouls, fast breaks, time counts, double-teaming, etc. are introduced gradually.
5. When do Recreational basketball practices and games begin?
Practices begin in November. There is one Recreational practice per week night and occasionally two when gym space is available. Games begin in January.

6. When does Instructional basketball begin and how long does the season run?
Instructional basketball begins in January. Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade Instructional Basketball runs Saturday mornings only for 1 hour sessions per group. The season runs from January through mid-February. Please note, however, that the 2nd Graders may be scheduled for a different day during the week instead of Saturday. You will receive notification from your coaches about practice days/times by the end of December.
7. Do the kids in the Instructional program get to play games?
While Instructional basketball will not have official games, there may be the opportunity for scrimmages. For 1st Grade, however, we will build up from teaching skills first and then as the children progress we move into teaching 1-on-1, 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and finally 5-on-5 basketball. At the Kindergarten level, we concentrate on skills and having fun with basketball.

When School is canceled due to inclement weather all WYB practices are canceled. When School is dismissed early due to inclement weather, all after school activities are canceled. Weather cancellations for games on weekends will be handled by emails and phone calls starting from the Director of Basketball down to the Commissioner, then to the coaches and finally to the families of the participants. Follow our Facebook page (Warrior Youth Basketball) for updates as well.

You can view the complete list of volunteer opportunities when you login to the website (Sports Connect) on the left side. You will need to create an account.
12. Do you need clearances to register a player since there are volunteer requirements?
No. Not all volunteer positions require clearances. For example, you can volunteer at the concessions table or to handle admissions for Travel games. Individuals who would be working directly with the players, however, are required to have full clearances. Learn more about required clearances.
13. Is the SYC Youth Club affiliated with the SYC School District?
Yes and no. The SYC Youth Club is a nonprofit organization independent from the Southern York County School District. It does get a little confusing since the logo is similar to the school branding, we do consider ourselves "Warriors," and we do work closely with the school district with regard to use of the school gyms and facilities. However, we are not the same.
