SYC Cheer Information & Registration

2020 SYC Cheerleading (Football)

Goal: The goal of the SYC Fall Cheerleading program is to provide an instructional recreation program for children 5 through 12 years of age. Our program supports the SYC Youth Football program, cheering sidelines of all away and home season games. 

SYC Youth Recreational Warriors Cheerleading is now open for registration. Participation is open to students that will be in Kindergarten through 6th Grade beginning August 2020.

Practice: Practices will take place in the evening 2x per week starting around August 10th and last between 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Practice location to be announced (most likely on the Shrewsbury Elementary School campus).

Important Notice: Parent meeting & uniform fittings/exchange is mandatory for ALL cheerleaders. This is expected to be in early June - please note: the day, time and location will be finalized after current quarantine orders are lifted.    

Registration Fee & Overall Program Cost:
Registration fee is $50.
Registration fee includes: hair bow, season-end gift, banquet fee, and also covers required facility usage, administrative and insurance costs of the Youth Club.

All uniform pieces are required and are paid for separately at Uniform Fitting. Generally, the program intends for participants to only pay for the uniform once and be able to exchange for the next size each year.  NOTE: If you are a new cheerleader, you must pay for all pieces described below. The pieces you receive may be new or may be provided from the exchange inventory. If you are a returning cheerleader and you have not returned/exchanged your uniform pieces, you must pay for replacement pieces as necessary. When uniform styles are discounted and the program must purchase new uniforms, the program attempts to offset the additional cost via fundraisers.

On your own you must also purchase:
"No Show" white socks and KAEPA Cheer Shoes. We work with Flying Feet at Mt. Rose Ave in York to obtain a discount. We highly recommend visiting Flying Feet for sizing because cheer shoe sizes are NOT the same as regular sneakers. Approximate cost of cheer shoes is $40.

Fundraising:
The cheer program plans a couple fundraising opportunities in order to offset replacement uniform costs, purchase pom poms, gifts at Homecoming, first aid kits, scholarship opportunities, etc. The primary fundraiser is a raffle - last year's raffle prizes included a crab feast package, 4 night vacation stay, Amazon Echo dot, and other gifts. Additional information regarding the raffle will be provided after registration close. Other fundraisers have included a bake sale at our Homecoming game and a game booth at local carnivals.

ABOUT SYC RECREATIONAL CHEERLEADING



What is Recreational Cheer?


The SYC Recreational Cheerleading Squad is an instructional, recreational cheer program that performs sideline cheers for Football games in the Fall and Basketball games in the winter. The program incorporates cheers, dances, jumps, stunting, and tumbling into their sideline and halftime performances.

Who Can Participate?

Recreational cheer is open to cheerleaders within grades Kindergarten to 6th grade and in the SYCSD or surrounding Southern York County area. All participants must register through the SYC Youth Club and sign the parent code of conduct in order to join the team.

What is the Commitment?

Practice: 
Participants must be prepared for two evening practices per week (beginning approximately 3 weeks prior to the start of the sports season. Practice participation is highly recommended - especially for the older teams to safely prepare their stunts. If a child is going to miss a practice, please notify the coach before the practice. Practice takes place at one or more of the SYCSD elementary schools.


Games:
 
For Football cheerleading, games are from late August through October on Saturdays or Sundays. Home games are held at Susquehannock High School football field (approximately one half are home games) while away games are at other local sports facilities within a 1 hour drive. For Basketball cheerleading, games are from December through mid-February on Saturdays or Sundays and held at one of the SYCSD indoor school gymnasiums.


Registration Fee:
$50 program fee which includes insurance, facility usage, hair bow, Homecoming gifts, end of season trophy/medal and gift. Uniforms are sold separately and outlined below.

Additional expenses will include:

  • Shell Top and Bottom - primary uniform pieces (approximately $70)
  • Bloomer Shorts and Crop Top - To be ordered with uniform (approximately $35)
  • Cheer Warm Ups – To be ordered with uniform (approximately $65)
  • Indoor Cheerleading Shoes – Kaepa Cheerful (available from Flying Feet approx $35-40)

What Else Should I Know?

Cheer Camp:

The cheer program generally offers a cheer camp during the summer before practice begins to learn a cheer and dance. This camp is three evenings and is a great way to meet their squad. Camp information is usually available by June 15th. Camp fees pay for facility usage, water, snacks, hair bow and Tshirt to each participant as well as serve as a fundraiser to the cheer program.

Fundraising:
The cheer program requires participation in one fundraiser to continue to support the program. Monies raised from the fundraisers have been used for pom poms, safety equipment, banquet costs, Tshirts for all cheerleaders, etc.
