ABOUT SYC RECREATIONAL CHEERLEADING

What is Recreational Cheer?

The SYC Recreational Cheerleading Squad is an instructional, recreational cheer program that performs sideline cheers for Football games in the Fall and Basketball games in the Winter. The program incorporates cheers, dances, jumps, stunting, and tumbling into their sideline and halftime performances.

Who Can Participate?

Basketball recreational cheer is open to cheerleaders ages 4 to 7th grade and in the SYCSD or surrounding Southern York County area. All participants must register through the SYC Youth Club and sign the parent code of conduct and medical waivers in order to join the team. For emergency contacts and communications, please make sure your information in Blue Sombrero is up to date. Families may also be asked to download a mobile app for ongoing communications with their coach throughout the season.

What is the Commitment?

Practice:

Participants must be prepared for two evening practices per week (beginning approximately 3 weeks prior to the start of the sports season). Practice participation is highly recommended - especially for the older teams to safely prepare their stunts. If a child is going to miss a practice, please notify the coach before the practice. Practice takes place at one or more of the SYCSD elementary schools and other local gym facilities.

Games:

For Basketball cheerleading, games are from December through mid-February on Saturdays or Sundays and held at one of the SYCSD indoor school gymnasiums. We only cheer at home games.

Registration Fee:

If you are keeping your uniform from football season, registration is $90 to cover insurance, facility usage and season-end gifts.

If you need a uniform, registration is $150 to cover your uniform which you then keep, hair bow, insurance, facility usage and season-end gifts. You must attend 1 of 2 uniform fittings to be held before the season start.

Additional expenses will include:

    ▪    Pom-poms: Will be made available prior to the start of the season for $20. If you have pom-poms from football season and they are still in good condition, you’re welcome to use them.

    ▪    Indoor Cheerleading Shoes – Kaepa Cheerful or any white cheer shoe (available Amazon.com or any cheerleading retailer approx $35-40)

    ▪    Optional: Cheer Warm Ups – To be ordered through spiritwear website, which will be shared at the start of the season.

What Else Should I Know?

Cheer Camp:

The cheer program generally offers a cheer camp during the summer before practice begins to learn a cheer and dance. This camp is three evenings and is a great way to meet their squad. Camp information is usually available by Feb 15th. Camp fees pay for facility usage, water, snacks, hair bow and T-shirt to each participant as well as serve as a fundraiser to the cheer program.

Fundraising:

The cheer program requires participation in one fundraiser to continue to support the program. Monies raised from the fundraisers typically support our season-end party.

2025 Basketball Cheerleading

The goal of Southern York County Warriors Basketball Cheerleading is to provide an instructional recreation program for children ages 4 through 6th grade. Our program supports SYC Warriors Basketball by cheering sidelines of home season basketball games. We provide a fun environment for your child to learn cheers, dance, tumbling and stunting.

Practices start in November and will be Monday and Wednesday evenings anytime from 5:30-8:00pm depending on the team and will be held at Shrewsbury Elementary. Practices may (in coach's discretion) reduce to one evening per week midway through the season. When you register, please make sure your contact information is up to date, so coaches can contact you with more information.

Games are from December-February, and are weekend afternoons/evenings at Southern Middle School or Shrewsbury Elementary School.

Registration cost with uniform (uniform is required) is $150, which includes our program fee, uniform, hair bow, medal, and a small banquet fee. This also covers required facility usage, administrative and insurance costs of the youth club. There will be two uniform fittings available before the season; attendance is required for at least one fitting if you are purchasing a uniform. Cheerleaders will keep their uniform at the end of the season.

Registration cost without uniform (for those that already have a fitting uniform) is $90.

*Family participation in our season fundraiser will be essential to ensure we maintain a strong program and keep registration costs at a minimum.

Warmups are optional and may be purchased on a spiritwear website. The site link will be provided post-registration. Cheerleaders may keep and use their warmups for subsequent years.

Pom-poms will be available for purchase for $20 and may be used for future years.

On your own, you must purchase:
- No-show white socks.
- Black leggings and black shorts.
- Cheer shoes. Basic white sneakers may be acceptable if your child does not intend to be a flyer; however, all flyers must wear appropriate cheer shoes for the safety of themselves and those basing them.

Parents, we want you! Are you interested in volunteering? We are looking for coaches, assistant coaches, team parents, and behind-the-scenes volunteers! Adult clearances are required. Please contact the Cheer Director, Katie Hamilton, at [email protected].
