About the Program
We understand your family has many options to choose from when it comes to playing sports. DYC has been providing wholesome activities and entertainment to the residents of Darien and surrounding communities since 1960. DYC is committed to providing an environment where everyone plays!

The softball league is run entirely by volunteers from the commissioner to the managers/coaches and provides girls, ages 5 - 14 of all abilities, an opportunity to learn and enjoy this exciting and rewarding sport. In addition to learning the game, kids will also learn how to be part of a team, communicate and problem solve with their peers, learn respect for their teammates, coaches, opponents and umpires, and begin to build leadership skills. Softball, like many sports, gives kids an opportunity to make new friendships which may last a lifetime!

New for the 2020 / 2021 season, the Darien Youth Club developed a travel softball program, Darien KnockOuts Fastpitch. If you are interested in learning more, please visit the DarienKnockouts or email Steve Crumpler, DYC Softball Commissioner

Divisions
Fundamentals 6U Ages 5 & 6 (Tee & Coach Pitch)
This division uses the 11” flex softball which is a softer ball to minimize injury. Players will be taught basic fundamentals to play the game of softball and the rules of the game. The core of the program is to teach while ensuring the players have a lot of fun. Teams are limited to 7 - 8 players to increase the amount of time each player has in the field and at bat. This also reduces the coach to player ratio which increases the effectiveness of instruction.

Practices will begin in mid April with games starting in May and finishing up in early/mid June. Games and practices are all held at DYC fields.

Minors 8U Ages 7 & 8 (Fast Pitch / Machine Pitch)
This division uses the 11” flex softball which is a softer ball to minimize injury. Players will be taught basic fundamentals to play the game of softball and the rules of the game. Player pitching is introduced in this division and is used in conjunction with a mechanical pitching machine. The first two innings feature a player pitcher with machine relief (no walks). The remaining innings feature only the pitching machine. Starting players pitching at this level prepares them for 10U where the players pitch the entire game. The pitching machine develops the hitting ability of the players.

Practices will begin mid/late March with games starting in late April and finishing up in early/mid June. There will be 6 home and 6 away games ending with a single or double elimination tournament held in mid/late June.

Though this is not a travel league we partner with surrounding towns to put on the season which will require "travel" for games. Practices take place at DYC fields. Games may be played at DYC, Westmont, Woodridge, BRW, and/or Downers Grove fields. We are always looking to add partner towns so this may change but we try to stay close to Darien.

Majors 10U Ages  9 &10 (Fast Pitch)
This division uses the 11” softball which is a hard ball. Players will be taught basic fundamentals to play the game of softball and the rules and strategy of the game. This is a 100% player pitched league with walks. Stealing is allowed after the ball crosses home plate, one base at a time but not home, to teach baserunning and catchers how to throw out base runners.

Practices will begin mid/late March with games starting in late April and finishing up in early/mid June. There will be 6 home and 6 away games ending with a single or double elimination tournament held in mid/late June.

Juniors 12U Ages 11 &12 (Fast Pitch)
This division uses the 12” softball which is a hard ball. Players will be taught basic fundamentals as well as advanced skills and strategy. This level of play is the game of Fast Pitch with few limiting rules.

Practices will begin mid/late March with games starting in late April and finishing up in early/mid June. There will be 6 home and 6 away games ending with a single or double elimination tournament held in mid/late June.

Seniors 14U Ages 13 &14 (Fast Pitch)
The season will begin end of May / early June with the double elimination tournament will be held throughout July. Though this is not a travel league we partner with SWS FastPitch to put on the season which will require "travel" for games. Games locations are in southwest suburbs of Chicago roughly bounded by I-55, I-355 and I-80. Travel to these area teams for away games is expected. There will be 10 home games and 10 away games plus a double elimination tournament.

2021 Rules of Play:
League follows the USSSA rules of FastPitch Softball with amendments. The rules are currently under review for 2021 but below is the link to the rules followed during fall of 2020. We do not expect many, if any, changes. Fast Pitch League Rules

While Engaging in Softball Practices and Games:

  • ALL managers, coaches, players, umpires, and parents shall treat each other with dignity and respect during all practices and games; misconduct may result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the league
  • KIDS are playing the game
  • Managers and Coaches are VOLUNTEERS
  • Umpires are HUMAN
  • Your child will NOT be scouted by a college or NFPL team during a DYC game or practice

Formation of Teams
The goal is to create teams as balanced as possible to ensure enjoyment of the game for all players.

  • Creation of New Teams (Please Note - below are the typical guidelines; changes may be made based on Covid-19)
    • Managers bringing in brand new teams and new players to the DYC softball program (6U - 14U) may start with 6 players, including their daughter. If the manager is creating a team 8U and above, the remaining roster will be filled from the draft. If the team is 6U, additional players will be randomly assigned.
    • Managers moving up from DYC 6U to 8U may choose up to 6 players, including their daughter, to form the team and choose the remaining roster from the draft
  • 6U - Fundamentals of Softball
    • Teams are limited to 7 or 8 players to provide maximum time in the field and at bat; the reduced roster also increases the effectiveness of practice and instruction on the field
    • These teams are mostly selected randomly which gives kids an opportunity to meet kids from other schools
    • Parent requests to play on a certain team will be considered but cannot be guaranteed
  • 8U thru 14U
    •  In 2018:
      • Each player (8U and above) was evaluated and observed in hitting, throwing, catching, running, and pitching (10U and 12U) by the league commissioner, directors, and coaches
      • Teams were evenly created by managers based on a draft utilizing evaluation results
  • In 2019 and beyond
    • Every player, new and returning, will be evaluated. This will help insure that new teams are created equal, existing teams while filling roster spots remain balanced, and will give us insights on where we need to focus our practices.
    • Managers, 8U - 14U, will continue with their team from the previous year, when possible, with roster gaps being filled from the draft based on current evaluations to ensure teams remain as balanced as possible
    • As hard as we will try to keep all teams even and the same each year, there will be situations that impact our best intentions. Please know we are always balancing what is best for the individual player and the league as a whole.
    • Some situations such as managers not returning, not enough players returning to a team, not enough players moving up or staying in the current level for a team, etc. may lead to returning players being drafted to new teams
  • Requests to "Play Up" / Play on a Specific Team
    • Requests for a player to be on a specific team will be considered on a case by case basis but are not guaranteed
    • Request for a player to "play up" one level will be considered on a case by cases basis but are not guaranteed. Evaluations of the player and the current enrollment of the two impacted levels will be considered before granting the player to "play up".
    • Such requests should be emailed to [email protected].
    • Requests for a player to "play up" more than one level or "play down" cannot be honored regardless of the situation. This is based on the rules of play and more importantly the safety of the players.
