Safety Huddle Study

Savannah United has partnered with Georgia Southern University to conduct a study on concussion education and sportsmanship using safety huddles.

What is a safety huddle?

Two topics that are covered in the safety huddles are concussion safety and sportsmanship.

  • Concussion safety means reminding people about what a concussion is, how it happens, and the importance of getting checked out if a player is not feeling well.

  • Sportsmanship means talking about respecting each other and the rules of the game to keep everyone safe.

Why is a safety huddle important?

Safety huddles mimic traditional sports huddles prior to a game to take the time to talk about concussion safety and sportsmanship. Huddles hope to promote a safer sport atmosphere in order to decrease concussion risks. Playing with a concussion is both dangerous and bad for the team. You cannot play well if your brain isn’t working right.

Who is involved in safety huddles?

  • Athletes

  • Coaches

  • Parents

  • Referees

  • League directors

Safety huddles bring everyone together to talk about concussion safety and sportsmanship. Huddles can change how concussion safety is viewed and lower the chances of concussions happening or athletes playing with one.
