Karl Caputo
Club Coordinator, 15U PREMIER Girls Head Coach, 13U Elite Girls Assistant Coach
Club SyrV co-founder, Karl Caputo, is entering his 13th season coaching for Club SyrV. During that time Coach Caputo has gained a reputation for instilling a love of volleyball, competition, and citizenship in all of his players. Caputo has coached every level from 2nd grade to collegiate volleyball for both boys and girls. Caputo’s 2021 season concluded with a second-place tournament finish for his 17U boys team and a tournament victory for his 14U Orange girls’ team.
In addition to coaching the 2021-2022 15U Club SyrV PREMIER Girls team and assisting the 13U Club SyrV Elite Girls team, Caputo also coaches the JV (2019-present) and modified (2013-present) volleyball teams at Westhill. With Caputo laying the foundation at the modified level, and many players choosing to play for Club SyrV, Westhill won the Class B New York State High School Volleyball Championships, back-to-back, in 2018 and 2019.
Caputo began his coaching career as an assistant at Central Square in 1997 as a high school junior under the guidance of Kay Barton. He went on to assist the SUNY Cortland women’s team in 1999 and helped establish the first women’s club volleyball team at SUNY Cortland in 2001. At the same time, Caputo served as the President, coach, and treasurer of the men’s volleyball team for most of his college career at Cortland, 1999-2005.
As a player Coach Caputo earned all-league honors in high school at Central Square, started on the SUNY Cortland team all six years he attended, and had the opportunity to start on the Central Region Empire State Games team as a middle, right side, and outside in various years between 1997 and 2010.
Caputo holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from SUNY Cortland and is currently a physical education teacher at Westhill High School. He also has teacher certification in health and mathematics. He taught summer school algebra for three years after taking 30 credits of college math all during the 2006-2007 academic year. And yes, that is the same exact time he had his first teaching job and his second child was born… What a year that was!
Karl is most blessed to be part of an amazing family! He lives with his wife, Jessica, two kids, Kwinn and Jocelyn, and their dog, Matilda, in Fairmount, NY.
