NO HEADING THE BALL - U12 AND BELOW

Who are AYSO Referees

All volunteers, they are us. Many referees start when their children are young and move up with them. Referee training is provided for all age groups and levels.

Why Does AYSO Need Volunteer Referees

AYSO is 100 percent volunteer organization; we all do it for the kids. Each season we need as many referees as coaches if not more.  AYSO is about playing Fun, Fair and Safe. Our referee training is what makes it possible. If there is no official to referee a game the kids don't get to play.

Philosophy on Refereeing

The Laws of the Game are intended that games should be played with as little interference as possible, and in this view it is the duty of referees to penalize only deliberate breaches of the Law.  Constant whistling for trifling and doubtful breaches produces bad feeling and loss of temper on the part of the players and spoils the pleasure of spectators.

Can I Referee my own kids game?

We want every Parent Referee to experience the joy of reffing their own kids game.

For U8 and below;
Parent Referees can always ref their own kids games.

For Fall (Competitive) Season - U10 and Above;

Assistant Referee:
A Parent Referee can be the A/R on any and all of their kids games during weeks 1 thru 10.

Center Referee:
Weeks 1 & 2 (Practice Games), a Parent Referee may be the Center Referee on their kids games.
Weeks 3 thru 10, the Center Referee should be neutral - have no affiliation with either team.  If there is a shortage of referees, A Parent Referee may Center Ref their own kids game, with the permission of the Referee Administrator or the Board Member in Charge.

Playoffs;

During the early rounds - up through the Quarter Finals, a Parent Referee may A/R their kids games, but they should be on the opposite touchline, in order to avoid any potentially uncomfortable situation with the parents.
Parent referees fortunate enough to have a child playing in the Semi Finals, Finals and Consolation games should enjoy being a spectator during their kids games.

Spring Season;
During the Spring/Non-Competitive season, for U10 and above, a Referee may Center Ref their own kids games.

We never want a Referee to miss their own kids game so they can go referee a different game.
