Girls Volleyball Summer Open Gym & Tryouts

LAST UPDATED:  July 17, 2018

Attention Parents of Incoming 5-8 Grade Girls,

Our volleyball program provides an opportunity for all players of every level of skill and commitment, while maintaining a sense of community through volunteerism from our parishioners. Our players have the opportunity to play with and compete with their friends and neighbors. They receive fantastic instruction and coaching all while learning the value of teamwork & commitment.

The goals of our volleyball program are simple:

·         INCLUSION: We want to include and retain as many players as we can from year to year – We have a place for every player to learn & grow.

·         INSTRUCTION: We want to provide the highest level of coaching & instruction as we possibly can.

·         COMPETITION: We will strive to be the best competition others face.

In an effort to strengthen our program and individual skill development we’ll be offering optional summer training at Visitation again this year.  The summer session will be open to any girl entering 5-8 grade that has signed up to play volleyball next year.  Each open gym will last one hour and will be a combination of drills and scrimmage.  There is no cost to participate in this program, and it’s a great opportunity to get some extra practice before tryouts. Open gyms are not mandatory, and have no bearing on team placement.

Summer Camp Hosted by TopSpin Sports.  John Spinney, head coach of Thomas More Women’s and Men’s Volleyball will be hosting a skills camp for local players at Visitation.  This is an excellent opportunity for the girls to get some extra instruction right before tryouts.  The camp dates are July 23rd – 26th for more information or to register simply visit the TopSpin website (

Tryouts will be held on August 3rd & 5th.  We are asking players to attend both tryout dates.  If you have a conflict and are unable to make one or both tryout dates please contact Katie Spinney or Julie Miller at (  The process of evaluating players is taken very seriously and each year we try to improve it.  Our goal is to place players where they have the best opportunity to compete, be challenged, and at the same time taste some success. In order to ensure the most comprehensive and fair assessment, we recruit parishioners and non-parishioners who have had a lot of experience playing or coaching volleyball.  Evaluators will assess players on the core volleyball skills and make recommendations on team placement.  Team rosters will be posted on the VAC website as soon as possible following tryouts.

Please consider volunteering to coach a team.  You don’t have to be a former volleyball star or know a lot about the game.  Prior to the season we offer a coaches clinic to arm you with everything needed to be a successful coach.  It’s a great opportunity to spend time with your daughter and other girls of the parish!  If you are willing to coach please send an email to Katie or Sherry ASAP.  Our hope is to identify as many coaches as possible prior to tryouts.
