WHY ARE WE THE FLYING PIGS?
Flying Pigs represent the dedication Southwest Louisiana Soccer Club (SWLASC) has to giving the game of soccer back to the players. Centered around "Putting The Fun Back in Soccer," our approach to building a successful soccer program is simple: Provide year-round soccer programs that are focused on player development in such a way that puts the “fun” back into the game. In our experience, players who are having fun within the sport tend to stay involved, develop faster, and build a lifelong passion for the game.
Southwest Louisiana SC believes kids learn and develop by playing soccer, not through drills. While drills do provide some value, they are no substitute for playing the game and learning on the ball. You know, when a coach yells, ‘Everybody freeze,’ and stops practice, all the kids are thinking, ‘Oh no, he saw me ... I screwed up.’ What if Coach said, ‘Hey Sarah, that was great the way you did that, show me that again.’ All of the other kids say to themselves, ‘Oh man, I can do that, I’m going to do it even better so he sees me.’ That’s how kids are motivated. No laps, no lines, no lectures. Just let them play.”
Give the game back to the kids. Let them actually have fun playing, If kids are having fun playing soccer, they want to play all of the time. The more time they spend with the ball at their feet, the faster they develop the skills to play. As they become better players, the more fun they have playing. See where we are going with this?
So what if a group of volunteer licensed coaches and former players develop a club's programs and adapt the teams training regimen so that the games played at practice develop soccer-related skills and problem-solving acumen without formally teaching them at all?
In a society where parents hire private trainers for third-graders and companies target sports instructional videos for 3-year-olds, our unorthodox approach to soccer may raise a few eyebrows. This radical departure from the traditional style will no doubt invite criticism. What better motivation could we have than the challenge of changing the mindset of those who believe that our approach will succeed "When Pigs Fly?"
“History shows us that the people who end up changing the world – the great political, social, scientific, technological, artistic, even sports revolutionaries – are always nuts, until they are right, and then they are geniuses.” John Eliot
