General Training Information

AYSO is built on volunteers and without people willing to step up and help out we would not be able to offer our kids a chance to play this great game the AYSO way! There is no way we can do what we do without your help so please step up and volunteer to make Region 1079 one of the best programs in the valley.
We are always in need of trained coaches, referees, team parents and volunteers for both Board and Non-Board personnel.

ALL of our current board members need various amounts of assistance during the year and if you want to get involved, please email the Regional Commissioner at [email protected]. The more involved you are, the more fun it is. For more information regarding the volunteer positions, please check out the information on our AYSO National Website AYSO Volunteer Information.

Any questions about your Safe Haven or Concussion Awareness status can be directed to our CVPA at [email protected].

Any questions about your coach certification status can be directed to our Coach Administrator at [email protected].

Any questions about your referee certification status can be directed to our Referee Administrator at [email protected].

To begin the process of becoming a volunteer with AYSO, you MUST complete both the Concussion Training and Safe Haven Training online (details below).

Below is information regarding the following training:

  • Concussion Training
  • Safe Haven Training
  • Coach Training
  • Referee Training

Concussion Training

CONCUSSION  TRAINING COURSE

All volunteers will be required to complete the Concussion Training Course if you did not complete it last year. This is a state law.

Please take the course offered by AYSO / CDC. The course takes about 30 minutes to complete and it could make a big difference to a child. We can help athletes stay active and healthy by knowing the facts about concussion and when it is safe for athletes to return to play.

Please make sure you take the class through the link below so the certification can be applied to your AYSO ID number.

Please print off completed certificate as well for your files.

Safe Haven

To ensure the safety of both children and volunteers, each volunteer is required to take a short in-person or online training session called Safe Haven®. It focuses on safety and appropriate behavior with children as well as other on-field issues. Agreeing to a background check is also required for each volunteer.

Becoming Safe Haven® certified may take a little time, but AYSO families know their children's safety is worth it.

Safe Haven® is both a child and volunteer protection program. It was the first of its kind in youth sports.

The child protection aspect is intended to prevent child abuse, promote education and awareness, enforce policies and screen and train volunteers. It includes proactive steps that promote a positive, healthy environment for children.

Volunteer protection is the result of volunteer training, certification and continuing education. The Volunteer Protection Act of 1997 provides certain legal protections for volunteers who have been trained and certified and act in accordance with a written job description and AYSO's policies and guidelines.

Referee Training

Referees are as critical to soccer as players and coaches. In AYSO, the game can’t be played if there aren’t enough referees. It’s most common for a volunteer to begin their AYSO referee career by refereeing their own child’s game. However, as they learn the Laws of the Game, develop their own techniques for managing players, coaches and fans, and gain an appreciation for how important the role of the referee is to a fun, fair and safe soccer experience, they often find it very rewarding to expand their knowledge and experience through AYSO’s advanced training and certification process. AYSO’s referee training is considered some of the best in the U.S. and includes both in-person courses in your community and online opportunities. Soccer knowledge is a plus, but is certainly not required. The AYSO referee training will give you all you need to know to have a terrific experience on the field.
