Expectations of SVPB Board Memers

Responsibilities

·          Know & understand the organization’s mission, purpose, goals, policies, programs and services conducted by SVPB

·          Responsible for  monitoring, overseeing and providing direction for the organization of the mission

·          Advocate for the organization wherever you are, attend and participate in special events, and educate yourself about the nonprofit’s special issues and needs

·          Act with reasonable care when making decisions and taking actions on behalf of the organization. 

·          Be willing to assist staff with fundraising, by offering time and talent to keep the financial health of the organization intact.

·          Serve and undertake special assignments willingly and enthusiastically

Meetings

·          Prepare for meetings by carefully reading all materials that were sent to you ahead of time

·          Suggest board and committee meeting agenda items for significant policy-related and strategic matters

·          Ask timely and substantive questions at board and committee meetings, consistent with your conscience and conviction

·          Follow and support the decision of the board.  Do not undermine those decisions if you are not in agreement

·          Maintain confidentiality of the board’s executive sessions when confidential information is provided to you.  Never speak for the board or league unless authorized to do so outside of the organization.

Conflict of Interest

·          Never accept (or offer) favors or gifts from (or to) anyone who does business with the organization

·          Maintain independence and objectivity

·          Serve the organization as a whole – your first obligation is to avoid any preconception that you “represent” anything other than the overall organization ‘s best interests

·          Disclose any possible conflicts to the board in a timely fashion

Fiduciary Responsibilities

·          Read and understand the organization’s financial statements and help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibility

·           Maintain financial accountability and effective oversight of the organization. As a steward of the organization’s resources, you must exercise due diligence to see that it is well managed and that its financial situation remains sound. Fiduciary duty requires board members to be objective, unselfish, responsible, honest, trustworthy, and efficient.

Things You Should Know:

·          We are a nonprofit organization and everyone is a volunteer with our organization

·          The Board meets monthly the third Monday of every month for a few hours

·          All Board members are required to contribute their time by being Board Member on Duty throughout the playing season

·          As a board member, you are committed to assisting with fundraising for the organization

A board position is a one year term & each position, aside from executive board, is up for election at the league annual meetin
