In May of each year, the PGSA conducts tryouts to select players for travel soccer teams that will compete in the NCYSA Classic league. Classic teams begin competing at the U11 age bracket and may continue to U18 level.
Classic selection process: All players for U11-U14 teams are selected during open tryouts in May. The U11-U14 teams will compete in both the upcoming fall and spring seasons. Girls U15-U18 are also selected during May tryouts and will play in Fall season only. Boys U15-U18 will be selected during tryouts in May and will play Spring season only. Tryouts are held yearly. Supplemental tryouts may be held after the initial tryouts for any team with open roster spots and this information will be posted on the PGSA website.
Time and travel commitment: A high level of dedication is required and players are expected to attend practices on a regular basis. Coaches may schedule practices three times each week and teams can play matches on both Saturdays and Sundays during the season.
A Classic season typically includes eight to twelve regular league matches with half played at home and half played away. Classic away travel is generally within a three hour drive of Greenville with competing teams usually in Wilmington, Jacksonville, New Bern, Wilson, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and sometimes Greensboro. Each family is responsible for securing their child’s transportation to the practices and matches.
Teams will also be required to participate in the PGSA Beast of the East tournament held annually but may also elect to participate in additional tournaments within (or out of) state. There is an additional cost to participate in tournaments. Teams may hold individual fund-raisers to help with costs.
Cost estimate: Participation in classic soccer requires the purchase of a team uniform (approx $100-$150) and uniforms are usually updated in 3 year cycles. Costs also include PGSA/NCYSA registration dues as well as team fees (which includes coaching and referee fees.) Each team’s fees are calculated based on actual player numbers and coach salary so figures below are only an estimate using average roster size and average coach salary.
U11-12 players $600 - $650 (estimated total for 2 seasons)
U13-14 players $650 - $700 (estimated total for 2 seasons)
U15 and up $350 - $400 (estimate total for 1 season)

Please note: Recreation level teams that do not travel outside of Pitt County are offered through Greenville Recreation and Parks Department in conjunction with the PGSA. Also U8-10 players interested in travel soccer may elect to participate in the PGSA Soccer Academy.
