Conduct Policy

BSGSA has a “NO TOLERANCE” policy in regard to inappropriate and disruptive personal conduct.

The use of vulgar, or foul language, or unnecessary argumentative and aggressive behavior with others will not be allowed during league games or practices.

Anyone in violation of this policy will be asked to leave the softball complex, or practice field, by the BSGSA Board Member on-duty, an Umpire, or a Team Manager/Coach. If the violator refuses to comply, the Big Spring Police Department will be called immediately to remove him/her from the premises.

Any person in violation of this policy who has been asked to leave, or was removed from the complex, may not be allowed to return to the complex, or team’s practice field, for the remainder of the season. A review by the Board will determine future participation.

Team Managers/Coaches must explain this policy and obtain the signatures from the parents on their team.

The completed form should be submitted to the Team’s Division Coordinator.

Draft and Tryout Policy

PLAYER DRAFT POLICY

OPTION PLAYERS:

Definition of an Option player:

The Head Coach and Assistant Coach must be the parent, stepparent, Guardian or a person designated by the parent of the child identified as an option player.
Each team can come into the draft with 2 options.  Any team coming into the draft with less than 2 options will be allowed to fulfill their roster in their first round of the draft (Ex: Team with only one option player would get 2 consecutive picks in their first round of the draft) in their normal selection slot.

DEFINITION OF A PITCHER:

Defined as having pitched at least 15 innings in the previous season. Any girl can try out as a pitcher. Teams that already have an option player who meets the definition of a pitcher will not be allowed to select another pitcher in their first round of the draft.

THE PLAYER DRAFT:

Numbers will be drawn to determine drafting order. The draft order will start with Team 1 and will go to the last team. The 2nd round will be in reverse, etc. (ex: 1,2,3,4,5,6   6,5,4,3,2,1   1,2,3,4,5,6)

Those teams with returning roster players will not draft until the round of free spot on the roster.

Example:          Team 1 has 5 returning players (RP)
Team 2 has 3 returning players (RP)
Team 3 has 6 returning players. (RP)
Team 4 & 5 are new and have no returning players.

Using the chart above Teams 4\5 will draft in order until Round 4.
Round 1 – T4 gets 1st pick then T5
Round 2 – T5 gets reverse pick, then T4
Round 3 – T4 gets reverse pick, then T5
Round 4 – T5 gets reverse pick, then T4, T2 gets 1st pick
Round 5 – Same as above in reverse
Round 6 – Same as above in reverse, T1 gets 1st pick
Round 7 – Same as above in reverse, T3 gets 1st pick

Team representatives participating in the draft must have their child identified as an option player or not have a child in the draft for that Division. Sisters in the same division that are in the draft together will be drafted together as two draft picks, and that team will be skipped in the next round.  Siblings of option players must be automatic picks in the 3rd round.

At the conclusion of the draft there will be a brief time allowed for any trades to be negotiated.

ONLY GIRLS IN THE DRAFT CAN BE TRADED.

RETURNING PLAYERS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE.

There must be at least two Board Members and the Division Coordinator present to certify the draft.  Board Members present will be there as Board Members only and not as a manager or coach in that division. A player’s draft selection order must remain confidential.

Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Executive Board and Board of Directors.

Coach Approval Policy

Coach Selection Process

Each year Big Spring Girls Softball Association (BSGSA) solicits coaching staffs for each of its Recreational teams. We endeavor to pick a Manager (Head Coach), and Assistant Coach and a Team Parent.  Team Staff members will have to complete a USA Background Check and SafeSport Training via the https://registerusasoftball.com website.

When the coach registers and begins the background process, they will be issued a USA Member Number, that number will have to be entered in the https://sports.bluesombrero.com/bsgsa “Volunteer” section as well.  This allows BSGSA Officials to track and approve coaches.

The job descriptions are as follows:

Manager (Head Coach):

  • Head of Softball Operations for the Team

  • In charge of developing practice plans, practice schedules game lineups and strategies.

  • Primary contact with BSGSA Officials

  • Provides guidance to athletes on the fundamentals of softball and being a member of a team.

 Assistant Coach:

  • Supports Manager’s practice plans and game strategies

  • Accomplishes tasks of Manager when Manager is not available

  • Secondary contact with Attleboro Fastpitch League

  • Provides guidance to athletes on the fundamentals of softball and being a member of a team

Team Parent:

  • Assists Manager and Assistant Coach with daily activities of the team

  • Primarily keeps control and organization of the dugout

  • Helps tend to minor First Aid issues during practices and games

  • Announces Lineup and keeps batting order prepared

  • Is sometimes chosen to communicate changes in schedule

  • Keeper of the Team Phone Tree

  • Organizes parents and collects completed Code of Conduct forms

In most cases, returning Managers and Assistant Coaches are approached first and given priority/seniority.  Followed by a search of new candidates that expressed interest via their child’s registration form. In rare cases, a Manager or Assistant Coach may be chosen that does not have any children in the program. This will be done after an interview process conducted by BSGSA Board members.

The league typically attempts to complete the Coaching Roster by the end of player registrations. While the decision is up to the team Manager, the league would encourage the Manager to find as many Assistant Coaches as needed. Parent participation is key.
