Vernon Youth Soccer – Sportsmanship S.A.G.E Pledge
A Commitment to Fair Play and Respect
This pledge outlines essential principles of the youth sports experience and serves as a personal commitment to sportsmanship, respect, and fair play. Signing this pledge is a requirement for participation in Vernon Youth Soccer, aligned with the values upheld by the Morris County Youth Soccer Association.
Why Sportsmanship Matters
Youth sports are meant to be fun, educational, and character-building. Children primarily play sports because they enjoy the game—not for trophies, scholarships, or praise from adults. Adults who become overly emotional or obsessed with results often lose sight of the purpose of youth sports.
Winning is not everything. Trying your best, learning from mistakes, and enjoying the game are what matter most. Children gain confidence and life skills through positive experiences, not pressure and criticism. As parents and coaches, we must remember: our role is to support, not to stress.
My Pledge to Set a Positive Example
As a parent, coach, player, or supporter, I commit to the following:
I will not be loud or negative toward players, referees, coaches, or spectators.
I understand that disrespectful behavior may result in my removal from the field.
If others make inappropriate comments, I will respond calmly and constructively, or not at all.
As a player, I will act in a way that reflects positively on my team and will avoid behaviors that could lead to ejection or embarrassment.
As a coach, I will offer encouragement and praise to all players—not just the top performers—because confidence and effort matter more than outcome.
I believe that striving to win, not necessarily winning itself, is what truly builds character.
I understand that playing time matters, especially in youth sports, as it helps players develop, gain confidence, and enjoy the game.
I acknowledge that mistakes and losses are part of the game. I will be patient and tolerant when players, coaches, referees, or spectators make mistakes.
I recognize that mistakes are learning opportunities—for players and adults alike.
I pledge to uphold and promote an environment of sportsmanship, integrity, and fair play, and will foster a culture of healthy competition where the game remains fun for everyone.
By signing this pledge, I demonstrate my commitment to supporting the development and enjoyment of every child involved in Vernon Youth Soccer. Parents, players and coaches or managers should sign the form each year.
