Our Tournament Program is open to boys and girls in grades 5th through 8th who are looking for a more competitive experience. These highly competitive teams compete against some of the top teams from across Oregon and SW Washington. Tournament teams can practice in upwards of 2-3 times per week and require a significant time commitment on the weekends. The goal of tournament teams is to provide our youth with opportunities to participate in competitive basketball that build their skills to a higher level of play.
There is also a higher level of financial commitment as well. The Registration Fee to KYBA covers the cost of insurance, equipment, and entry fee into our annual Tournament, the KYBA Classic. It also goes to help cover other operational costs of the organization. The Registration Fee does not cover other costs such as uniforms and other tournaments, which will be the added responsibility of the parent/guardian. The number of tournaments are determined by the head coach as well as the amount of travel. There are a number of local tournaments that are held in the Salem area, however, additional travel between Portland and Eugene is not uncommon with other destinations such as the coastal areas and Central Oregon.
Teams generally consist of 10 players. Tryouts are conducted annually (for each grade and gender separately) and occur in late September to early October. Typically there are 2 separate tryouts held for each grade and gender. Players are only required to participate in one of the scheduled tryouts, however, full participation in both tryouts are strongly encouraged. Extraordinary circumstances which prevent a player from participating in a tryout will be taken into consideration by the Board on a case by case basis. Teams are not pre-determined prior to Tryouts. Even if a player made the team the prior year, they are required to tryout again each year. In order to avoid bias and achieve a fair opportunity for each player, Tryouts are typically conducted by KYBA Board Members, the Head Coach for the respective team, and McNary Basketball coaches (as available). No KYBA Board Member is allowed to evaluate a particular age/gender for a team in which their child is trying out (unless they are the Head Coach). Results are then compiled and then discussed between the KYBA Board and respective coaches for final selection. Notification of the final results will be posted within one week of the conclusion of Tryouts.
