Frequently Asked Questions

In what division (aka “level”) will my child play?

Little League International has parameters that NALL must follow for placing players in a division based on their age. Within those parameters, factors like experience, number of roster spots available, and team drafts help determine the final landing spots for our registered players.

What divisions does NALL offer?

NALL offers tee-ball, softball and baseball programs with a wide variety of divisions.

Tee Ball (Boys & Girls)Baseball (Boys & Girls)  Softball (Girls)
 Wee-Ball (3 & 4 y.o.) Minors A - Coach Pitch (5-7 y.o.) Minors B - Coach Pitch (6-9 y.o.)
 Tee-Ball (4-6 y.o.) Minors AA - Machine Pitch (6-9 y.o.) Minors A - Kid Pitch (8-11 y.o.)
  Minors AAA - Kid Pitch (8-11 y.o.) Majors (9-12 y.o.)
  Majors (10-12 y.o.)
  Juniors (13 &14 y.o.)
  Seniors (14-16 y.o.)

How does the age thing work in Little League?

Softball and baseball follow different rules for determining a child’s “playing age.” Simply put, the Age Determination Date for a Little League Baseball player is the actual age of a child on August 31 of the current year. The Age Determination Date for a Little League Softball player is the actual age of a child on December 31 of the previous year. The Baseball Age Chart and Softball Age Chart are helpful visual aids in understanding this rule. Tee-ball follows the baseball age rules.

Will my child need to try out?

Baseball players LL ages 8-12 and Softball players LL ages 9-12 will need to attend at least one assessment prior to the beginning of the season and their placement on a roster. This allows coaches to see players work through drills before drafting their Majors and Minors Kid-Pitch teams. Younger divisions do not have a draft.

How often do they have practices and/or games? Is there a fixed schedule?

Because NALL is a volunteer organization, we work with our volunteer coaches to develop team schedules that are respectful of their personal schedules. That being said, we do have guidelines for minimum and maximum weekly field time. Our youngest teams generally have the most set schedules with practice schedules becoming more flexible at the oldest divisions.

Tee-Ball Divisions

Wee-ball: One (45) minute session held on Saturday mornings broken into fun skill stations and ending in a one inning “game” where everyone bats and plays the field. The season usually runs from mid-April through late-May.

Tee-ball: One weekday practice and one Friday or Saturday game per week; practices and games last approximately (60) minutes. The season usually runs from early-April through late-May.

Baseball Divisions

Minors A & AA: Typically two to three events (practices and games) per week lasting (90) mins each. One game is normally played each Saturday. Season runs from mid-March through late-May. Minors AA season ends in a short playoff.

Minors AAA & Majors: Typically three events (practices and games) per week lasting (120) mins each. We try to avoid weekend games at the Majors division. Minors AAA often plays a game or practices on Saturday. Season runs from early-March through early-June. Both divisions end their season with a playoff.

Juniors & Seniors: Due to the number of players involved in school baseball by these ages, we generally ease into the schedule. Practices start in late-March with only one or two practices or games held per week until late-May. The final weeks of the season often involve three games per week. Season wraps up in late June.

What equipment is provided? What do I need to provide for my child?

Your registration fees cover a jersey and hat for your player. Every player will also have access to shared team equipment which includes bats, batting helmets and, at Minors and above, catching gear. You will need to provide a fielding glove, pants and cleats for your child. If your son intends to try the catcher position at practice or in a game, they must wear an athletic cup at all times while doing so. This is a Little League International rule and not negotiable. Oftentimes players prefer to have their own bats, batting helmets, batting gloves, catching equipment, bat bags, etc. Those are all optional. In softball, face masks are encouraged, but not required.
