Cheer/Dance FAQ

When does the season start and end?
The Pop Warner season officially starts on July 15th and could extend all the way into the last week of October. Official schedules will be provided by each respective head coach.

Isn’t it really hot out in July and August?
It sure is! The months of July and August in particular can be really hot.  It is imperative that your child drink plenty of water during the season. This includes the night before practice and during the day before practice. We cannot stress this enough. DRINK WATER!

Does my child need specific skills?
NO! There are no try-outs and no specific skill requirements. Just bring your willingness to learn and work hard!

How often are practices?
Pop Warner cheerleaders will practice two to three times a week at our field at Norris Park on South Hughes Street in Apex.  Practices are determined by each team’s head coach.  If there are specific days that your child will have to miss practice, please discuss with the head coach.

What are the age categories?
Cheer teams are split into teams based on age.  Children from ages 5 to 13, as of July 31st, will be able to participate in our program.

What do the cheerleaders do other than practice?
Pop Warner participants cheer on the sidelines at football games beginning on the last Saturday in August through the end of the season.  Though the teams will mostly cheer at home games (at an Apex-based middle school), there may be opportunities to cheer at away games.  The Cheer Commissioner will work with the head coach to determine the best location for the cheerleaders each Saturday.

What do I have to pay for?
Once registration is paid, the only required additional expense is to purchase their own cheer shoes.

What does ASA provide?
All cheerleaders will receive a cheer uniform (top and skirt) to be returned in good condition at the end of the season. Pop Warner cheerleaders will use poms provided by the coach at each game.

What extra items are provided by ASA?
Each cheerleader receives an ASA custom-designed practice t-shirt as well as competition bows.

**** Spirit wear for athletes and parents is on sale throughout the season.

If my child is on a Pop Warner team, when and where are the competitions?
Local competition mostly likely will be held on a Sunday in mid to late October. Teams compete in their age division, skill level and team size against other teams within the league.  Local competitions have been held at either Cleveland High School or Clayton High School.

What are the volunteer requirements?
ALL Pop Warner participants are required to have a designated person volunteer for shifts at home games. A master schedule is distributed and volunteers are asked to sign up for at least 2 shifts (2 hours each) for the season. ASA is a 100% volunteer organization. EVERYONE from the coaches to association commissioners to league and region staff are all volunteers.
