Academy

Development Through Training

Overview

In soccer terms, an "Academy” is when a club keeps a collection of players within an age group as opposed to placing them on individual teams.  All players of the particular age group will train together. This will allow players to work with a USSF licensed training staff to improve their overall individual skill development.  The emphasis will be on technical training and working to instill a passion and love for playing with the ball (and less on competitive matches).

The purpose of the "Academy” is on player development through a greater emphasis on training and by creating the most fun and supportive player-centered environment as possible.  Trainers will also have an emphasis placed on coaching education to enhance the youth coaches' knowledge and teaching of the game of soccer!

What to Expect

  • Practice:

Players will have the opportunity to train three nights per week; twice under the direction of the professional coaching staff and one session with a qualified parent coach.  Training sessions last approximately hour and half in duration.  A flexible training schedule will be created to accommodate multi-sport activity participants.  Players also train one night per week during the winter.

  • Games:

Academy teams will play in the Iowa Soccer Academy league and play approximately 6-8 matches.  Academy matches are played on Saturdays for boys and Sundays for girls.  Academy clubs must still follow recreational play guidelines, such as 50% playing time in matches. The emphasis is placed on creating an environment that is focused on individual development as opposed to team development.

  • Festivals:

In addition to the league matches, the teams will also participate in  2 Academy festivals and our annual Monster Match in October.

  • Coaching Staff:

All coaches must attend a National Youth Module Course and/or a USSF ’E’ License course in order to participate in the training and coaching of the players at matches.

  • Team Formation:

In accordance with ISA rules, teams are restructured from the fall season to the spring season to ensure that our focus remains on the individual.

  • High level of coordination and good agility
  • During games is aggressive in their attitude and approach to getting involved and tends to dominate play
  • Demonstrates high level of focus and concentration during practices and games
  • Started to narrow down the number of extra-curricular activities
  • Soccer is a high priority
  • Practices with a ball on own time outside scheduled games and practices
  • U09 player who will tryout for the U11 competitive age group in the following year
