GBC is a non-profit organization and member of the Central Jersey Pop Warner Conference. Since 1966, the East Brunswick Golden Bears have provided a quality Pop Warner program to children ages 5-15. In 1998, the EB Golden Bears merged with the Spotswood Chargers. The new “Golden Bear Chargers” continue to serve children in East Brunswick, Spotswood, Helmetta and Milltown by providing a successful program that strives to instill team spirit, positive self-esteem, sportsmanship and fair play.
In 2008, our Midget and Pee Wee cheer squads competed nationally in Walt Disney World. The Midget team went undefeated and took 6th place at Nationals. The Pee Wee team brought home a NATIONAL TITLE - 1st Place at the advanced level. Then in 2009, our Jr. Midget cheer squad went undefeated through Regional Competitions, advanced to Nationals, and brought home a 2nd place trophy. In 2012, our GBC Junior Pee Wee cheerleading squad went undefeated advancing to Nationals where they took 5th place and our Jr. Midget football team went undefeated in conference play. In 2014, our Pee Wee cheerleaders took 2nd place at Nationals and in 2015 our Jr. Midget football players brought home the Division III South Championship title.
Levels of Play:
There are 5-6 squads each for cheerleading and football. They are (in order from youngest to oldest): Tiny-Mite, Mighty Mite, Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Jr. Midget and Midget. The level at which your child participates is according to league guidelines and determined primarily by age. Weight (football) and prior participation in the sport are also factors.
Beginning in the 2013 season, GBC has adopted the USA Football Heads Up™ model for teaching our players. All GBC football and cheer coaches are Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. certified. USA Football Heads Up™ concussion certification is also required of our coaches EVERY YEAR. All coaches must have these certifications before stepping on the field. GBC has also designated a Player Safety coach for each team, who oversees the proper equipment fit for each player, and is present at all games and practices to evaluate any player suspected of having an injury. Our Football and Cheer Commissioners are also responsible for holding instructional coaching clinics each year to improve coaching techniques and player safety.
