Amherst Jr. Comet Football Divisions for Fall Football

Pre-K to Kindergarten Flag Football -  This is the simplest form of football that we offer. At this stage we teach basic fundamental football no different than learning your ABC’s or learning to count. We developed this stage of football for several reasons. First we want to introduce football on a very basic level to an age appropriate group.  In the past these youngsters were lumped into a group of kids that were much more developed (referring to 1st and 2nd graders). We felt that these younger kids as a whole were not benefiting from this model. With this thought in mind we developed this entry level program so that this age group could receive the attention that is appropriate for their age. Thus in doing so it would give them more opportunity to play football and develop as a youth. Not to mention its really no fun for parents to watch their child receive limited playing time just because they are misplaced in a program. The development of this group is our foundation to the future.

1st/2nd Grade Flag -  This age group is about taking that next step forward. Kids are starting to mature and can handle a little more structure. Mentally they are becoming more receptive to the seriousness of football but still have a lot of the innocence that limits the amount of retention that is required to be able to utilize full football gear. The focus of this group is to reinforce basic fundamentals and skills to introduce understanding of the game and to prepare them for what we're going to label our bridge programs to 11 on 11 football. Some travel is involved in this league to other municipalities in Lorain County. This is done to achieve a full schedule, eliminate bye weeks and add competition.

3rd/4th Grade Padded Flag -  All levels of football are important but from a major safety stand point this may be the most important of all.  The next piece to the puzzle is having kids to play football in full gear allowing them to understand how to properly use this equipment for their protection. This step, if taught properly, helps to promote heads up football and safety to ensure our children enjoy playing football for years to come as healthy well round individuals. Adding equipment to children is an important step and deserves the attention that we are now giving it. Parents, we can’t stress enough how valuable playing at least one year of padded flag is to the health of our youth they look to us and depend on us to ensure their safety and well-being.

4th/5th Grade Rookie (Modified) Tackle -  This level of football was developed as "tweener" program. This allows parents to add an extra step incorporating the basic fundamentals of tackling before going 11 on 11. It also allows for some to continue to develop before moving on to the final progression in our program. This is tackle football just in a smaller format. This allows coaches to be more thorough teaching fundamentals to smaller groups. At this level our goals should be to reinforce fundamental football and safety while incorporating tackling.

5th/6th Grade 11 vs. 11 Varsity TackleThe Final Piece of our Puzzle. This is where it all comes together not just for the kids but parents and coaches alike. This is where we continue to focus on fundamental football honing our craft most likely at a dedicated position by now but on a grander stage eyeing our transition to Jr High/High School Football. The fruits of our labor should be on display at this point as more kids should be prepared to play at a higher and safer level.  This part of our program acclimate kids to bigger groups, the need to work on their craft at home and really just owning responsibility to their own development.

The Amherst Jr. Comets are a part of the Lake Erie Youth Football League. Our 1st through 6th grade programs participate along with other LEYFL communities teams in their respective divisions. These are the communities that our teams will travel to. We do our best as an organization to schedule as many home games as possible but to be fair to everyone in the league we must include away games.

Got all that??? If you still have questions on what programs are being offered, please email us at [email protected] or come out to one of our Face 2 Face Registrations and we'll clear up any issues that you might have.
