Amherst Jr. Comet Football Divisions for Fall Football

Kindergarten & 1st Grade Flag Football  & 1st/2nd Grade Flag Football -  After many requests to join the other communities in the LEYFL that participated in the K/1st Flag division we have decided to include that in our 2020 program! Unfortunately that means that we will no longer be providing the Pre-K/K program. If you participated in the Pre-K/K program in 2019, you will be eligible to participate in this division as your child should now be entering either Kindergarten or 1st grade for the 2020/2021 school year. The teams will get multiple practices a week as well as a full 7 game guaranteed season (not including playoffs). These divisions are the very basics of flag football while also introducing the kids to a practice and game structure.Teams will be formed based on the total number of registrations from the age group. There will be K/1st teams that have both Kindergartners and 1st graders on the same team and there will be 1st/2nd teams that have both 1st and 2nd graders on them. Per LEYFL rules there a Kindergartner and a 2nd grader can not share the field at the same time for safety reasons. Some travel is involved in this league to other municipalities in Lorain County.

3rd/4th Grade Padded Flag -  All levels of football are important but from a major safety stand point this may be the most important of all.  The next piece to the puzzle is having kids to play football in full gear allowing them to understand how to properly use this equipment for their protection. This step, if taught properly, helps to promote heads up football and safety to ensure our children enjoy playing football for years to come as healthy well rounded individuals. Adding equipment to children is an important step and deserves the attention that we are now giving it. Parents, we can’t stress enough how valuable playing at least one year of padded flag is to the health of our youth as they look to us and depend on us to ensure their safety and well-being.

4th/5th Grade Rookie (Modified) Tackle -  This level of football was developed as "tweener" program. This allows players to add an extra step incorporating the basic fundamentals of tackling before going 11 on 11. It also allows for some to continue to develop before moving on to the final progression in our program. This is tackle football just in a smaller format. This allows coaches to be more thorough teaching fundamentals to smaller groups. At this level our goals should be to reinforce fundamental football and safety while incorporating tackling.

5th/6th Grade 11 vs. 11 Varsity TackleThe Final Piece of our Puzzle. This is where it all comes together not just for the kids but parents and coaches alike. This is where we continue to focus on fundamental football honing our craft most likely at a dedicated position by now but on a grander stage eyeing our transition to Jr High/High School Football. The fruits of our labor should be on display at this point as more kids should be prepared to play at a higher and safer level.  This part of our program acclimates kids to bigger groups, the need to work on their craft at home and really just owning responsibility to their own development.

The Amherst Jr. Comets are a part of the Lake Erie Youth Football League. All of our programs participate along with other LEYFL communities teams in their respective divisions. These are the communities that our teams will travel to. We do our best as an organization to push for as many home games as possible but to be fair to everyone in the league we must include away games.

We as an organization have no input on who gets home games and who does not. All we can provide the LEYFL with is available host dates for all of our teams. They decide who plays when and where.  Schedules will be out approximately 1 week before the start of the season.
Games this are shooting to start around Labor Day. Stay tuned to our Facebook Page and Coaches for more information as it comes in.

Got all that??? If you still have questions on what programs are being offered, please email us at [email protected] or come out to our Parent Meeting on March 16th at 6pm at the Amherst Jr. High Cafetorium!
