OUTDOOR LIGHTNING SAFETY GUIDELINES

MAKE SURE TO CALL THE HOTLINE  AFTER 7:30 AM  FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER INSTRUCTION. It is rare when we cancel, but it does happen. 386-447-4004

ALWAYS ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION………EACH AND EVERY TIME!

As we all know there is no place absolutely safe from lightning, however, some places are much safer than others. If you hear thunder or there is a thunderstorm approaching find a safe building. If there is not a safe building take shelter in a car. Bolts from the blue can occur even if there are clear skies above. Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall activity. Any dark cloud base, increasing winds or static electricity in the air are all good indicators of storm activity close by or nearing quickly.

30/30 rule

The 30/30 rule applies when you see lightning and the thunder follows within 30 seconds, which means thunder clouds are close. Activities should be postponed and everyone should seek shelter. There should be a 30 minute minimum prior to resuming any outdoor play.

If there is not a safe building to take shelter:

Stay away from tall objects as lightning tends to strike the tallest object. If in an open area, crouch down, always try to be the lowest to the ground for safety. Stay away from water, wet or metal objects (such as fences or poles) as both are major conductors of lightning. The current from a lightning flash can travel long distances.

DURING REGULARLY SCHEDULED GAMES LISTEN FOR THE AIR HORN!!!!

IF A CHILD IS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING: CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE.

WHEN POSSIBLE STAY INFORMED ABOUT THE WEATHER PICTURE FOR THE LOCAL AREA.
