Northern United Soccer Club

Meet Our Staff

In youth soccer, coaches play the most critical role in player development and providing a rewarding experience for players and parents alike.  NUSC recognizes this and is implementing improvements to its coaching program.  These improvements will ensure that the most qualified candidates are identified and selected for coaching roles and that NUSC coaches receive a high level of support with training, certification, player development, player/team registration, uniforms and other areas.

NUSC is increasing both the size and quality of its coaching roster and is actively seeking new coaches to join the club.  Ideal candidates are experienced youth soccer coaches with ties to area scholastic programs and parents of elementary aged soccer players with soccer backgrounds.  Parents whose children have enjoyed playing in recreational soccer programs and are interested in trying out club soccer are also welcome.  If you have limited experience but would still like to get involved, that is okay.  NUSC will assign you to an appropriate role, perhaps as an assistant coach for a younger age level, and provide training and experienced mentors who can help you with your development as a coach.

If you are interested in coaching at NUSC , complete the NUSC Coaching Application and submit it to NUSC's coaching director Brian Farenell at [email protected].

Northern United Soccer Club is proud of the many coaches they have. All coaches are licensed and receive additional training throughout the year.

Here are a few of our coaches:

Brian Farenell

Director of Coaching
Email: [email protected]

He has been coaching with Northern United, and previously Adirondack SC, since 2004. A certified USSF F licensed coach, he is also presently the assistant coach for the Lake George varsity boys soccer team and goalkeeper coach for the program since 2012. Prior to that, he spent 11 years as the boys modified coach at Glens Falls. Brian has played in adult leagues for over a decade and for many years before that. While living in West Africa in the mid-90s, he spent two weeks training with the Guinean second division team Niandan FC. Brian believes that soccer should emphasize positive, attacking play with a premium on skill and creativity.

Blake White

Coach

He is graduate in Physical Education K-12 from Cortland State. Blake has taught and coached in the Glens Falls/Lake George area for the past 35 years.  He has 32 years experience as the Lake George Varsity Boys Soccer coach. He has been involved with the our Soccer Club since 1994 as coach and board member.  Blake holds coaching certifications in many sports as well as training in first aid, CPR & AED. He has an "F" license in soccer as well as a speed & agility certification through Lee Taft. He has been a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and the New York State Coaches Association for much of his professional life. Having played and coached many different sports, soccer is his favorite to coach. His idea of coaching soccer includes a skillful mix of passing, receiving, moving, shooting, and overall teamwork. Working on the basics and seeing the kids progress is the goal of coaching any sport.
"It's a thing of beauty when it all comes together"
It also makes the game enjoyable to play and watch.

Michael McLaughlin

Coach

Michael McLaughlin has been actively coaching soccer in the area for the last twenty years. Hired by Blake White in 1994 to coach the Lake George Boys Modified Team, Mike was asked to stay on at the school, and he became heavily involved in player and systems development for the Warriors. His 17 years in the boys’ program, working closely with his friend and mentor, Coach White, included two separate seasons as the Modified coach, three years as the Varsity Assistant Coach, and his 12 years coaching the Junior Varsity gave the Warriors a valuable testing ground for working the kinks out of new offensive and defensive variations adopted over the years at Lake George. His team-oriented coaching style was tailored to molding players along the program guidelines to prepare them for their high school careers as contributing members of the Boys Varsity Soccer team playing for Coach White.

In 2011 Mike took over the reins of the Lake George Girls Soccer program as head coach, a long-time coaching dream realized, where he is incorporating the same concepts he learned over the years with the goal of creating a self-sustaining quality program that teaches and reinforces solid character-building traits and encourages players at all levels to find the very best within themselves and apply their skills for their team’s benefit with unselfish and intelligent tactical play in a close-knit “family” environment. Mike has a coaching philosophy that favors a fast-paced possession game in a modern alignment stressing disciplined and clean soccer as an integrated unit with a spirited offensive attitude and an aggressive and robust style of defense.

Mike coached 12 indoor and outdoor teams for Adirondack Soccer Club in two prior periods beginning in 1995, while also serving on the club’s board of directors for three years. He considers himself lucky to have been able to get started coaching in the years when Adirondack was establishing itself locally, and also for having had the wonderful experience of coaching indoor teams at the locally renowned Charbonneau Recreation Center in Malta NY. Mike thoroughly enjoyed his experience coaching boys teams at the U-16, U-17, and U-19 levels in past seasons, and 2014 will mark his first year as a girls coach for Northern United Soccer Club.

In addition to his “soccer life” Mike has been happily married since 1980 to his lovely wife, Jane, and is a devoted husband, father of two sons, and very proud grandfather of two.

He has also coached U-10 through Premier U-17 boys. Ron is a USSF "D" certified licensed coach. He has also served on the Adirondack soccer board. Ron states "Coaching for NU Soccer and Glens Falls Recreation has enabled me to meet many players and their families. This has allowed me to grow as a volunteer in our community. Soccer has become a large part of my family's life and my life. My projected future goals are to keep coaching/teaching soccer to local youths. Also to ensure well skilled players for future soccer school programs. I would like to accomplish some personal goals with my youngest son by volunteering more for our community."
