Coaching Philosophy: Our coaching philosophy is always a work in progress – Create an atmosphere where every player can achieve their full potential with hard work and a great attitude.

What do you love about coaching? I love the potential impact I can have on the kids lives. It is very fulfilling when you’ve been trying to build a player up and develop a specific set of skills and characteristics, and then seeing it come to life on the soccer field.

Max von Rabenau grew up in Glen Ellyn, IL. where he played Junior Varsity and Varsity for his high school soccer team at Glenbard West. He has traveled around the world and played soccer in different countries - Romania, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Sweden, and Belgium. Found a profound love for the sport and continues to play, teach and learn from the game. After his travels, he then attended Colorado Mountain College and earned All-Regional Player Award for both years attended. Where he then transferred to University of Portland to focus his studies on Philosophy and French.

In his second year in Portland, he was hired by the Portland Timbers as a camp coach and started to coach for a local club in Vancouver, WA. In 2015 and 2018 Max was awarded "Coach of the Year" by the Portland Timbers, and promoted to a Regional Training Center Director and Olympic Development Assistant Coach. During his time in Portland, Max completed his USSF National B License, his USC National Premier Diploma, and National Youth License.

Growing up Max usually played as an attacking forward the #9 or outside midfielder #7 or #11, so naturally fell in love with the HappyFeet philosophy where everyone has a ball and is free to learn at their own pace. At this club, we teach the ball skills, the fundamentals, and the advanced level skills when appropriate. We know that each child learns at their own pace and to give each child a "Bobcat" they can foster their own love for the game.

Matt moved to Kansas City from Nebraska in 2003 to attend William Jewell College. While at Jewell, Matt played goalie and helped his team become NAIA Heart of America Region V Champions and reach the Final Four of the 2006 NAIA National Tournament. Growing up, Matt played for a few different clubs in the Omaha area, experiencing the pros and cons of different styles of coaching. The majority of his youth soccer experience was marked by coaching styles focused on one and two-touch passing, emphasizing winning at all cost. It was not until college that Matt was first exposed to playing a style of soccer that emphasized the skill and footwork of the individual player. This past experience adds to Matt's passion for coaching the Legends' way.

Matt has a passion for people. He loves working with kids of all ages, helping them to develop into confident, highly-relational young men and women. This has been a theme throughout his life. From church-work and mission trips, to working in orphanages and soccer camps, he has always found life in giving to younger generations. Matt continued that journey of service to younger generations by joining the HappyFeet Legends organization in Kansas City. It was there that Matt’s passion for developing children and his love for the game of soccer were united.

Once Matt started coaching HappyFeet classes, it didn’t take long for him to fall in love with it. He enjoyed experiencing the challenges of child development and finding ways to refine the HappyFeet curriculum. While coaching at the HappyFeet level, Matt was mentored by Andy Barney and Andrew Clifton. As he studied and experimented with coaching the Legend’s way, he became more and more confident that focusing on the primary skill of individual foot work was crucial to develop children into both brilliant players and people. Matt continued to focus on teaching deceptive dribbling and finishing as he coached both a boys and girls team for the Kansas City Legends.

Matt then had the opportunity to experience running HappyFeet operations during his time as the HappyFeet Area Director for the home office in Kansas City. This responsibility helped prepare him for the move to Bentonville and startup of NWA HappyFeet Legends.
Matt is joined by his long-time friend Erik to continue learning how sports, specifically soccer, can be instrumental in the development of tomorrow's leaders.
