Monte Cassino 6th -8th grade basketball teams have a successful at turnout at
the Diocese state tournament this past weekend.
Going into the first
night of play, the Saints came out with a complete sweep with 6th grade
girls defeating Westminster 27 – 13, 6th grade boys defeating Christ
the Kind gold 43 – 27, and 7th grade boys defeating All Saints
Norman 22 – 16. The Saints gained some momentum and excitement going into the
second day of the state event.
Going into the second day of the
event hopes were high and the excitement was just now getting started. The 6th
grade girls played John Carroll and lost 15 – 6, due to the lost they where sent
to the loser bracket and competed against Cascia Hall. The 6th grade girls battled but unfortunately came up short losing to Cascia Hall.
The
6th grade boys played against Marquette (White) on the second round of tournament play and suffered a tough loss. The loss forced them to go compete in the loser bracket for possible 5th place spot. They defeated Cascia (White) 27-25, but then suffered another tough loss to Cascia (Blue). The 6th
grade boys placed 6th in the state tournament out of 16 teams.
The 7th grade boys opened up with a great first night Friday defeating All Saints (Norman). The team faced a tough Christ The King (Gold) team in the second round suffering a tough loss. The loss sent the group to the losers bracket where they competed against Casica Hall – White and suffered the second lost
of the weekend..
The 7th
grade girls opened up the first round Saturday with a victory over Rosary, 70 – 35. This allowed them
to go to the next round against Christ the King which they also defeated 39 –
25 and this win propelled them to the championship game against St. Mary.
Although the final game was a back and forth one the 7th grade girls
came out on time to bring home a State Championship. The 7th grade girls win back to back state championships!
The 8th grade
girls started off well by defeating Cascia Hall, 34 – 5 in the first round of play. They advanced to the semi-finals to play a tough Christ The King team. A thriller semi-final game with fast paced back and forth action. Despite a great effort by the 8th grade girls, Christ The King pulled away with the upset. 8th grade girls played for 3rd place but suffered a one point loss to St. Eugene taking 4th place for the tournament.
The 8th grade boys
actually had two teams in the state tournament again this year. The white team played the first
game against Cascia Hall (Blue) suffering a tough loss 35 – 30 which sent them to the
consolation bracket. They faced to a athletic Marquette (Red team, suffering their second lost of the tournament.
The 8th Grade Boys (Blue) where hitting on all cylinders. They entered the weekend with a win against
Westminster (White) – 28. They faced St. Eugene in the second round defeating them 32 – 22 to advance to the semifinals. The only thing standing in
the way of a trip to the championship was St. Mary, which they defeated to advance the championship. The finals was a rematch of last years finals, Monte Cassino vs. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
