Sherwood Junior Baseball Organization (SJBO) is the youth baseball program in Sherwood, Oregon. We offer recreational and competitive spring leagues for kids in grades k-8, as well as a fall league for Sherwood players and teams from other associations.
Recreational/Development Programs (Grades K-3)
SJBO offers three recreational and development leagues for younger players:
T-Ball (Primarily Kindergarten)
The T-Ball season starts mid-April and ends mid-June. There will be 2 practices held during the week for 4 to 5 weeks, then games will start and will be 2 times during the week for 5 weeks. All practices will end once games begin. All kids should hear from their coach by mid-April.
Kids are provided with t-shirts and hats through SJBO. Baseball pants are not provided or required. Each coach will have a bat and batting helmet for kids to use who do not have their own.

Rookies formerly Minors (Primarily 1st Graders)
Rookies is a developmental league designed to allow players to maximize their exposure to all the variables of baseball and to further enhance individual skills. Players will play multiple positions on defense. Offensively players will hit off a pitching machine the first half of the season. During the second half of the season, players are introduced to player pitching - there will be no coach pitching. Scores are kept by coaches and coordinators only for purpose of end of season tourney seeding. The main goal is to introduce players to as much "real" baseball as possible and most importantly to have fun.
There are no evaluations at the Rookies level. Teams are formed by the program coordinators by random selection. Season starts in mid-April and ends in early June. There are usually 2-3 practices/games per week held in the evenings. There are no Saturday/Sunday games except for the end of season tournament. Games are played at local school fields in Sherwood. Players will be provided with a jersey and cap for uniforms. They will need to provide their own gray baseball pants and glove.

Futures formerly Majors (2nd and 3rd Graders) Developmental Rec League, No Travel Involved
The Futures program is a developmental/recreational league designed to allow players exposure to “real” baseball and to further enhance individual skills. Players will play multiple positions on defense with players pitching from the mound (kid-pitch). The Futures will follow the JBO Minor National rules and regulations of play. The main goal is to introduce players to as much "real" baseball as possible and most importantly to have fun before taking those next steps to the competitive program. Players will be evaluated at a one time evaluation session. Season starts in mid-April and ends the weekend after school lets out. There are usually 2-3 practices/games per week held in the evenings. There are no Sunday games except for the end of season tournament. Games are played at local school fields in Sherwood.

Competitive Programs (Grades 3-8)
SJBO offers nine levels of play under the Junior Baseball Organization (JBO) umbrella. There are three major divisions, broken down generally as follows:
- Seniors (7th & 8th grade)
- Juniors (5th & 6th grade)
- Minors - formerly Midgets (3rd & 4th grade)
Within each of the three major divisions there are three skill levels that teams are assigned to:
- Federal (advanced)
- American (above average)
- National (developmental)
While most players play in their grade-level divisions, age and grade in school are factors in which division your child is eligible to play for. If your child is exceptionally young or old for their grade level, contact [email protected] for guidance on selecting the right division.
What is the purpose of the player evaluations?
SJBO’s player evaluations are intended to provide a means to place kids on teams that are consistent with each player’s individual skill level.
When are the player evaluations?
Evaluations are held in late February or early March at different times depending on your child’s age and grade in school. Check the SJBO website for the latest information on dates and times.
Who evaluates my child’s skill level?
To the best of our ability, we try to find knowledgeable baseball people in the area that do not have any affiliation with the SJBO program to evaluate players. In no case do we use a family member of any child being evaluated.
Prospective head coaches also participate in the evaluations, but their scores and notes are for their personal use only and are not used by SJBO for team or skill level assignment.
What if my child cannot attend the player evaluations on the scheduled date?
A registered player who cannot attend the scheduled evaluations will be placed at the lowest skill level. In the event of exceptional circumstances that prevents a player from attending evaluations, contact [email protected] to discuss options.
What is the federal tryout?
The federal tryout will take place in February to construct teams made up of players with advanced skills.
When can I expect to hear what level my child will play?
After the Federal tryouts are completed, a draft is held for each team. We expect to complete the draft no later than a week after tryouts are completed. When the team draft is complete, players will be notified of their team assignment within 24 hours.
How many teams are at each level?
It depends on the total number of teams we have, which varies from year to year. JBO defines the number of teams at each level based on the number of total teams within a club’s age division.
When will I find out who my child’s coach is?
After the player draft.
When do practices start?
At the coach’s discretion, but generally practices begin the week after spring break. Some teams may elect to start prior to spring break.
When do games start?
League games are on weekdays, beginning late April or early May, depending on level.
Are there weekend games?
Yes. Each team will play in a weekend tournament in Sherwood, and most teams will opt to play in additional weekend tournaments at varying locations throughout the season. Tournaments may begin prior to league play.
Are there extra costs for weekend tournaments?
Costs for the weekend tournament in Sherwood are included with your registration. Costs for all other weekend tournaments are the responsibility of the participating team.
Where are the league games?
SJBO participates in the Westside Youth Baseball district. Away games may involve teams at any or all Westside associations.
When does the season end?
Regular-season games end by late June or early July. Depending on team performance, advancement to district and/or state tournaments may extend the season until mid to late July.
What are the governing rules for SJBO?
As a club, we operate under established bylaws and have an operating manual. These documents are available on the SJBO website. All baseball play is governed by National Federation of State High School Association rules, with JBO-specific modifications. JBO rules can be found on the JBO website.
