Optimist Fishing Club 2024

Have fun fishing at some private ponds in the southern Wake County area!

Bring your gear and we will provide worms for bait. We usually have some cane poles you can borrow, but you are encouraged to bring your own equipment. Points are awarded for your catches and there will be awards at the end of the season for the biggest fish and most fish caught.

Not only is fishing a lot of fun, you get to visit a lot of private ponds in the area that are not available except through this club. Once you're registered we will send email updates about pond locations each week.

The fishing dates for this season are:

Ten Saturdays are scheduled for fishing. The time each Saturday is 7:00 AM to 11:00AM. You can arrive and start fishing at 7:00 AM or later, but we need to be cleaned up and done fishing at 11:00 AM each week. The awards ceremony is the last Saturday.

May 11th and 18th

June 1st, 8th and 22nd

July 6th, 20th and 27th

August 3rd and 10th

The pond locations are still being finalized. They will only be announced to those that register since they are privately owned ponds.

Summer 2024 Beach Volleyball

Summer Recreational Beach Volleyball! Get excited about playing beach volleyball at the Optimist Farm sand volleyball courts. They are mostly shaded in the evenings which is when we play so don't worry about the blistering heat -- the courts are generally very pleasant and the Optimist Farm property is private and somewhat secluded -- but convenient to all of southern Wake County.

Here are some details on the fun so you can be aware of what to expect!

The format of the season:

Evaluations: Week of June 6th. More details on evaluations times will be provided.
Teams will be formed by the coaches just after evaluations. We will keep teams small - about 6 players on a team. Please consider that when signing up since players that are absent a lot will impact the team's ability to succeed.
Practices are usually 90 minutes, but could be 2 hours or 1 hour depending on scheduling and the number of teams formed. Practices and games will be on Monday through Thursday evenings. We generally do not practice the week of July 4th.
Before games there are generally 2 practices a week. Sample practice times are: 5:30 to 7:00 or 7:00 to 8:30. When three teams need to practice on a court, there are 3 one hour slots at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30. The courts may have to be shared based on when coaches availability.
Games will start the week after July 4th. When games start teams will generally have 1 evening of games per week and 1 practice per week.
The end of season tournament is the last weekend in August the 26th to 28th

NOTE: We need more coaches and community volunteers to make this season successful. Please consider some areas where you could volunteer to help. Here are some ideas:

More coaches are needed
Someone to coordinate getting referees for games
Someone to help with scheduling practices and games. The courts are only really used Monday through Thursday evenings by our league. Friday and Saturday evening are generally off limits because the Club House at the Optimist Farm is rented to people that host big parties we want to stay away from. During the day courts are available though it is likely very hot many days in the Summer. If we could support more teams, we could expand our program and more easily grow in the future.
Sponsors and donations for new volleyballs or other improvements around the courts
Other helpers such as assistant coaches and bookkeepers.
