Referee Training

Regional (Basic) Referee Training

There are several options to getting certified as a Regional Referee in AYSO. Below are the most common in Area 5C. Contact your Regional Referee Administrator or the Area Referee Administrator at [email protected] if you have any questions!

Basic Referee Online and Companion Courses

The Basic Referee Online Training is an alternative means of training entry‐level Regional Referees. It provides the same level of training as the Basic Referee Course, but does so with a combination of online and live instruction. It is an alternative to the Basic Referee Course. Typical live instruction is 4-5 hours long.

Here's all the steps to get certified as an AYSO Regional referee by attending the Basic Referee Online and Companion Courses:

  1. Be at least 12 years old.
  2. If you are not already a registered volunteer, go to http://eayso.org, click on "Apply as a new adult volunteer" and fill out the form. When you finish you'll be assigned an AYSO ID.
  3. Go to http://aysotraining.org, enter your AYSO ID and last name, then click COURSES on the menu.
Click on and complete the following courses:
    • Course R002 - Basic Referee Online Training (60 mins)
    • Course MT02 - AYSO's Safe Haven (required for all volunteers) (60 mins)
    • AYSO CDC Concussion Awareness (required for all volunteers) (45 mins)
  4. Sign up for a Basic Referee Online Companion Course in our area by visiting http://eayso.org, login, click "Enroll to take a class". Set Section to "5", Area "C", Region "all", then click Search.
  5. Attend the Basic Referee Companion Course you signed up for! You must have taken Course R002 - Basic Referee Online Training online before coming to this class! The class will be a classroom course with an exam at the end. The purpose of this class is to review and test the knowledge you should have obtained from the online training.
  6. If your region offers it, attend the preseason field training session. This will be a couple of scrimmage games specifically for new referees to practice with experienced referees.
  7. Signup for an account on our referee scheduling system, Sportacus (http://sportac.us). Once you are verified, you will be able to self-assign for any games that work with your personal schedule.

Basic Referee Online Course and (In-Person) Basic Referee Online Course

The Basic Referee Course is the most through and longest means of training entry‐level Regional Referees. Typical live instruction is 7-8 hours long.

The (in-Person) Basic Referee Online Course is an alternative means of training entry‐level Regional Referees. It provides the same level of training as the Basic Referee Course, but does so with a combination of online and live instruction. It is an alternative to the Basic Referee Course. The key difference between this course and the Basic Referee Online and Companion Courses is that students watch the online training during the in-person training, so taking the online training ahead of time is not required. Typical live instruction is 4-5 hours long.
