U14G Blaze sow seeds at Manna Soup Kitchen garden

The DYSA U14 Blaze met Michelle Bonanno, Coach Anthony’s wife, and some of her Fort Lewis College students, on April 9th at the Manna Soup Kitchen Community Garden for a morning of planting seeds and work in the expanded garden area.

The girls started by choosing vegetable seeds they wanted to see planted in the garden.  They planted the seeds in containers to take home and get started with plans to bring them back to the garden in late May for planting.  We then worked in the actual expanded garden area and built open composting areas with pallets against the fence.  The team had to shovel the composting soil out of the way to build the pallet areas and then divide it up evenly in each space.

They braved the chilly winds and threat of thunderstorms without complaining and by the end of the morning, they felt pretty good about their accomplishment.  They are excited to return next month with their plants for the garden and have even discussed wanting to come back at the end of the summer and serve a meal made from the garden.

I want to thank Anthony and Michelle Bonanno for suggesting this project, the girls for their tremendous efforts and the parents for getting them to the site.  We look forward to our next visit!
