Sailing Lessons (Additional Information)

Medford Boat Club Members,

We are very excited to provide sailing lessons for the summer of 2021. While things are starting to return to normal, there are still some COVID policies in place, which are as follows:

For individuals 12 years old and over AND vaccinated, masks or social distancing are not required. However, for individuals that are unvaccinated and/or under 12, masks are mandatory and social distancing is required. With these policies in mind, lessons will be structured the following way:

Beginner Youth Class (space is limited)

Beginners who are under 12 years of age will be required to sail by themselves unless they are sailing with a sibling. Parents MUST be confident that their child will be able to sail on their own at some point this season. Coaches will not be in the boat with any beginners. Coaches will provide instruction in the classroom setting and from the club motor boats. If you as a parent are not confident in your child’s ability to sail alone, we advise you to sign up for family lessons with your child. Children will learn the fundamentals of sailing. They will be sailing N-10s and Opti (Optimist) sailboats. As with any sailing lessons, the instructors will make decisions about when to send the participants out sailing, in consideration of weather and wind conditions. Safety is our number one priority. Classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm. (times are subject to change due to scheduling needs)

Family Beginners

Beginners of all ages and younger sailors who are not comfortable sailing on their own can sail with a family member (sibling or parent). Family sailors will learn the fundamentals of sailing. They will be sailing N-10 boats and will also potentially sail 420s. Family members may choose either the evening classes or the day classes. Evening classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5pm to 7pm. Day classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12am. (times are subject to change due to scheduling needs)

Advanced Beginner

Sailors who have completed Beginner lessons and/or have a fundamental basis of sailing, are vaccinated and over 12 years of age are eligible for advanced beginner class. This class introduces sailors into tactical sailing and racing. Unvaccinated youth may still participate but will only have the option of sailing single-handedly (solo). Please indicate on registration form which status is applicable to your participant(s). Sailors will sail both N-10s as skippers and crews, and single-hand Optis. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:30pm to 3:30pm. (times are subject to change due to scheduling needs)

Intermediate

Sailors who have completed Advanced Beginners, are vaccinated and over 12, are eligible for intermediate class. Unvaccinated youth may still participate but will only have the option of sailing single-handedly (solo). Please indicate on registration form which status is applicable to your participant(s). This class includes an introduction to 420s as skippers and crews. Classes will be held on Monday and Wednesday 12:30pm to 3:30pm and Thursday 5pm to 7pm. (times are subject to change due to scheduling needs)

Racing Tactics

This class is for more advanced sailors who are vaccinated and 12 or over. Sailors will race 420s as skippers and crews. Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday 12:30pm to 3:30pm and Thursday 5pm to 7pm. (times are subject to change due to scheduling needs)

Adult Beginners

Adults who are beginners will sail N-10s. Classes will be held on Tuesdays 5pm to 7:30pm. (times are subject to change due to scheduling needs)

Please take the time to consider which class is right for you and your child prior to signing up for lessons.

Sailing is a great lifelong skill to learn, and lessons provide a fun summer experience.

To sign up for lessons, please email Jillian Casey, head sailing instructor, at [email protected], and include a copy of the 2021 sailing registration form.

Additionally, we are looking for adults and/or parents interested in volunteering for a sail committee, emails regarding this can be sent to [email protected] as well.

We look forward to a great summer of sailing,
MBC Sail Staff
