LEAGUE AGE

For baseball divisions, this is the age attained by a participant as of April 30 of this year. For softball, this is the actual age of a child as of January 1, 2019. These are the dates used by Little League International, and thus South Burlington Little League, in determining the league age of each player for the current season.

LEAGUES

SOFTBALL – MINIS

  • LEAGUE AGE:  6- and 7-year old* softball players.  First year league age 5-year-olds play T-Ball. Click here for baseball information.  (Girls with a birthday in January, February, March or April who begin with the T-Ball program as a baseball league age 5-year-old are eligible to play Minis in their second season with SBYBS even though they are not an “official” softball league age 6-year-old).  Families looking for a parent/child program that focuses on skills without playing games should contact the S.B. Recreation Department (846-4108).

  • DESCRIPTION: Some travel games against other towns will be scheduled.  Players use a batting Tee and coach pitching is introduced for those players who can hit a pitched ball.  Basic skills are taught and re-enforced. Kids generally play multiple positions. Scores are not officially recorded.  This is not a drop-off league; parents are required to stay throughout practices and game.

  • DAYS OF THE WEEK FOR GAMES & PRACTICES: Mon. and Wed. evenings. Weekday times for April are 5:30–7 p.m.; Minis games end by 7:30 p.m.

  • FIELDS: Any one of the elementary schools, Dorset Park, Upper Farrell Park, JC Park, other town parks.

  • DESCRIPTION: Player/coach pitch travel league which prepares players for the more competitive Majors at the next level.  Skill level increases and strategy is now being introduced. The league focuses on skill development.

  • DAYS OF THE WEEK FOR GAMES & PRACTICES: Tues./Thurs./Sat/Sun.; JC Park, Dorset Park, Upper Farrell Park, other town parks. Minors/Majors play games against local towns, so their away games require travel. Home games are at Upper Farrell Park or JC Park.  Weekday times for April are 5:30–7 p.m.; Sun. times vary.

  • FIELDS: JC Park, Dorset Park, Upper Farrell Park, other town parks.

  • EVALUATIONS: Minors teams are created by a draft system. During the draft, in a series of selection rounds, players with equivalent evaluation scores are selected by coaches, one per team until all players are selected.  The goal of the draft is to ensure each team has equal distribution of skill and ability and to balance the number of players per team. Player evaluations are a necessary part of this process. Anyone registering to play in Minors is expected to attend evaluations at UVM’s Gutterson Field House, Sunday, March 17, time to be announced.  Players should wear sneakers, bring a glove and attend the full session for their league. If for any reason a player cannot attend the evaluations, parents must notify Eric Gray (734-2241) in advance. Please arrive 15 minutes in advance to allow for check-in time.

SOFTBALL – MAJORS

  • LEAGUE AGE:  10-, 11- and 12-year-old* softball players. (First year 10-year-olds should play Minors)
