Western North Carolina Youth Sports Association (WNCYSA) places the highest priority on ensuring the safety of our young participants, and we consider it both an honor and a privilege to be permitted to coach our youth.

WNCYSA will require a criminal background check of any individual wishing to coach, assistant coach or volunteer in another role for a team. PLEASE READ ALL INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE BEFORE CONTINUING WITH YOUR BACKGROUND CHECK.

Background Check Options for Payment

To Start your Background Check Click on the following Buttons below. The WNCYSA will pay for any volunteer wanting to offer their assistance with the youth program. The cost for the background check is $6.95 per volunteer. If you would like to help and pay for your background check, there is an additional button to do so. By volunteers paying for their background check, this opens up more financial assistance for youth to play baseball and softball.

General

WNCYSA screens for the following offenses, similar to The National Alliance for Youth Sports:

If an applicant is found to have been convicted, pled guilty or nolo contendere of any of the following offenses, no matter in what time frame unless specified, he or she will not be allowed to work, coach or volunteer for WNCYSA. Additionally, pending convictions of or arrests for the following items will be considered disqualifiers:

  • Any crime, misdemeanor or felony, involving children as either an accomplice or victim
  • Any felony (other than sex or violence related) within the last 10 years
  • Any sort of abuse or assault/battery — physical or sexual
  • Rape
  • Any crime of a sexual nature, including possession or dissemination of pornography
  • Homicide or manslaughter in any degree
  • Attempted murder
  • Domestic violence
  • Child neglect
  • Felony drug crimes
  • Misdemeanor drug charges within last 7 years.
  • Felony Animal cruelty
  • Misdemeanor Theft/robbery within the last 7 years
  • Misdemeanor Forgery/fraud within the last 7 years
  • Kidnapping
  • Arson
  • Weapons violations
  • Any lesser crime involving force or threat of force against a person.


Coach Screening / Background Check Policy Statement and Process

I. Statement
Criminal background screening on Coaches is conducted by an outside third party which specializes in such work, and overseen (in specific instances) by a screening committee.  This is executed in an effort to protect the children who participate in organized baseball/softball and related activities associated with WNCYSA.
 
II. Definitions
WNCYSA recognizes a Coach is any person who leads and instructs players at practices and/or games - or portions of practices and/or games.

The criminal background screening is mandatory, no exceptions.
 
III. Procedure
All candidates for the above mentioned positions must sign a Release Form for Criminal History which gives LTYA the right to check criminal history records and verify social security numbers. This work is executed directly, through https://www.jdp.com, and the secure URL at which coaches can execute their WNCYSA check is:

League Pay
No other personal information (e.g. work history, financial, credit, etc.) is checked or researched. The company executing background checks has agreed to such terms contractually, and confirms such direction annually.
 
The company never forwards any individual's information to the league where no issues are discovered.
 
In the event information surfaces via the background check, a screening committee, with members consisting of President, Vice President and Secretary of WNCYSA, will review such background check information to determine coaching eligibility. Only members of the screening committee will review data obtained, which will then be processed discreetly. All information is strictly confidential and will not be made public under any circumstances.
 
Reasons for being declined the opportunity to coach are noted below as part of this policy. In some instances, factors of time may be taken into account when considering coaching eligibility (i.e. length of time since disposition of certain offenses).
 
The decision of this screening committee may be appealed, for the purpose of clarifying facts or explaining extenuating circumstances, to the screening committee.
 
All criminal history record information will be promptly destroyed at the end of the current WNCYSA season.
 
All coaches are required to notify the committee immediately following an arrest or conviction of any of the listed offenses. Any coach, who while coaching for WNCYSA is arrested for committing an offense as listed, will immediately forfeit his/her coaching eligibility until disposition by the courts. A conviction of an offense as listed will result in termination of coaching eligibility as stated in the policy.
 
The following is a list of offenses prohibiting an applicant from participation as a Coach under WNCYSA -- offenses including but not limited to the following:
Arson
Assault (including aggravated and sexual)
Aggravated Kidnapping
Aggravated Robbery
Crimes against Children (including abandonment, abuse, endangerment,
pornography, possession or promotion of pornography, enticement, solicitation, sale
or purchase of, injury to, or indecency)
Criminally Negligent Homicide
Deadly Conduct
Delivery of Marijuana
Manufacture of or Delivery of a controlled substance or dangerous drug
Any violation of a law intended to control the possession or distribution of any controlled substance or illegal drug
Indecent Exposure
Injury to Elderly or Disabled
Intoxication Manslaughter
Kidnapping
Manslaughter (voluntary or involuntary)
Murder
Prohibited Sexual Conduct
Prostitution (including promotion of, aggravated promotion of)
Public Lewdness
Rape
Sexual Abuse
Marijuana Possession**
DWI /DUI**
Theft**
**Eligibility dependent upon the severity and length of time since offense occurred. The WNCYSA will make all final decisions regarding eligibility.
