Saturday March 2, 2019 will be a big day for soccer in Morgantown!

For the 2nd year, the WVSA Hall of Fame Awards Dinner will be held in Morgantown!

In addition to the Awards Dinner, there will be Coaching and Referee Training sessions during the day. These events are free, and top level speakers from around the world will be running them! Registration for these events can be found at the links below. Sessions will start around 9 or 10 AM, and MUSC U12 players can participate in the coaching sessions - a wonderful chance to get seen by college coaches, and get some state of the art training at the same time! Not to mention getting to play soccer INSIDE the Waterfront Hotel!

The Awards Dinner will be at 6:00 PM. State and Regional Awards will be presented, and the 2019 Hall of Fame Class inducted. We nominated both Shahab Mohaghegh and Ray Petrisin. Darren Huckaby and Ryan Wycoff will be receiving awards for WVSA Administrator of the Year, and Boys Recreational (Grass Roots) Coach of the Year!

More information on Shahab:
If you play, or have played Adult Soccer in Morgantown, Shahab is one of the people you owe a great debt of gratitude for! He, Andy Anderson (WVSA Hall of Fame Class of 2016), Jim Adams (WVSA Hall of Fame Class of 2017), and several others (future Hall of Famers to be named later!) came up with the idea for Adult Soccer, and actually did something about it!

The Morgantown Adult Soccer League (dba Buckskin Soccer) was formed as part of the 1994 World Cup Celebrations, and started with several teams, playing 7 v 7 at Laurel Point. No bathrooms, no pavilion, no grass, just lots of dirt and rocks, and even more desire to make it happen.

Shahab served as the 1st President, and promoted the league tirelessly, both in Morgantown, at the University, and with the WVSA.

That league is now the Adult Soccer Division of MUSC, and has around 40 full teams in 5 divisions, with approximately 500 players, and it is now entering its' 25 year anniversary year!

Shahab worked on fields, worked as a referee, recruited players, and still plays today in the 40+ Division. Shahab set up all the IT work needed to run the club, including the website and registration, back in the early days of the internet, and before there were canned programs to create websites.

Shahab brought international players to the league and these international players (mainly students and professors at WVU, and professionals at the Department of Energy and the CDC) were instrumental in keeping the league alive and making it viable in the early days, and many of these players are still active in the Morgantown soccer community.

Shahab was a licensed High School referee for more than 10 years, a U.S. Soccer Federation licensed referee for 10 years and an NCAA referee. He was part of the referee team in an NCAA playoff game at Penn State.

Shahab completed and has gained his coaching "B" license certificate with the U.S. Soccer Foundation and the "B" license certificate with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)

Upon completion of his coaching certificate, he was invited to become a volunteer assistant coach at West Virginia University men's soccer varsity team by coach Paul Marco. He served as a volunteer assistant coach with the men's soccer varsity team for more than six years. During his time with WVU's men's soccer team, the team became the Big East Champion (2006) and made it to the NCAA's Sweet Sixteen (2007).

We want YOU to come to the Hall of Fame banquet to help us honor Shahab, as well as Ryan Wycoff (Boys Grassroots Coach of the Year) and Darren Huckaby (Administrator of the Year) - the easiest way to get your ticket is to send an email to Hall of Fame Ticket! Ticket price is $50, same as on the WVSA website.
