One of the most exciting parts of Little League Baseball is state tournament baseball, which includes the 10U, 11U, and 12U levels. While the state tournament teams recognize the hard work, dedication and attitude that some players bring to their game, it is neither the purpose nor the most important part of River Forest Youth Baseball Softball (“RFYBS”). Instead, it is a reward for the few players who, based upon the perception of the Head Coaches, demonstrate the best combination of:
- Playing ability (pitching, fielding, batting, and baseball IQ);
- Character (sportsmanship and attitude); and·
- Availability/Dedication (100% commitment to team, willingness to practice, work hard and strive to achieve goals).
Not every Player makes a state tournament team and those left out often include some who may be deserving of selection. But like any other subjective process, there is no perfect system. All we can hope is that we make it as fair and accurate as possible, while always supporting the ideals of Little League Baseball. And for those Players who do not make a state tournament team, RFYBS will do whatever it can to support as many summer tournament teams as possible for those Players.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for state tournament team consideration, a player must have played in 60% of his/her RFYBS season. A player must also be 100% committed to his/her state tournament team, meaning conflicts such as other sports, camps, vacations, etc. will be considered when determining a player’s eligibility. August 31 is currently the Little League Age Determination Date for all tournament teams, except for the four months of children born between May 1 and August 31, 2005 up through the 2018 season. For more information about the Little League Age Determination Date, please visit http://www.littleleague.org.
At the 8U and 9U levels, there are no state tournament teams and no selection process. Those 8U and 9U interested players are placed on their respective 8U and 9U teams. In the event there are enough interested players for more than one 8U and/or 9U team, those players will be evenly split into two teams by the coaching staff and/or by the RFYBS Board.
VOTING
All state tournament players are chosen by a vote of the Head Coaches in the Boys Majors and Boys Minor Divisions. Each Head Coach for the Boys Majors Division will rank the top 15 players who qualify (taking into account playing ability, character, and availability/dedication) for and have shown interest in playing on the 12U and 11U state tournament teams. Each Head Coach for the Boys Minors Division will rank the top 15 players who qualify (taking into account playing ability, character, and availability/dedication) for and have shown interest in playing on the 10U state tournament team. Those rankings for 12U, 11U, and 10U will be submitted and tallied.
Based on those final numbers, the state tournament teams will be determined for each respective level with teams traditionally consisting of 11 – 13 players depending on the respective state tournament team’s needs. In the event there is a tie in the rankings, there is an issue surrounding a player’s availability, and/or there are any other issues surrounding the players/team, it will be up to the discretion of the head coach of his/her respective state tournament team to make a decision in the best interests of that team. For example, a head coach might decide to take a player who was ranked 14 or 15 over a player who was ranked 12 or 13 if the head coach feels like the 14th or 15th ranked player would serve the head coach’s team better. Players who are not selected for the state tournament teams will be eligible and encouraged to play on the summer tournament teams.
REMEMBER – STATE TOURNAMENT RANKINGS AND VOTES ARE TO BE TREATED BY ALL PARTICIPANTS AS HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL AND POTENTIALLY DAMAGING. ANY UNNECESSARY DISCLOSURE OF THE CONTENTS OF RANKINGS OR VOTES IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. ANY MANAGER OR COACH FOUND TO HAVE VIOLATED THIS RULE WILL BE BANNED FROM COACHING.
