Tee Ball

Tee Ball is a division offered in the spring season for both boys and girls ages 5 and 6 (view age chart for boys or view age chart for girls). Players league age 4 will need to wait until the following season to begin playing Tee Ball.

COACHES NEEDED!

Coaching Tee Ball is not difficult. It's more like supervising than coaching, and we're here to help. When you sign your child up for Tee Ball this spring, make sure to sign up as a head coach or assistant coach as well. We will provide each team with two practice plans and a pre-game warmup plan. The more parents available to help, the better. And most importantly, if we cannot find someone to step up to coach your child's Tee Ball team, then that team will not be able to play. Don't let that happen!

For 2017, EBYBS is going to make some major changes to help improve the division. 1) Attempt to assemble teams with fewer players; a goal of 7 players per team (we need more coaches/team supervisors than ever before), 2) Each inning will begin with the last two batters in the batting order on first base and second base so kids are spending less time on the bench, 3) Allow batters to reach second base on big hits to the outfield, 4) Outs will be counted, but teams will still bat through their entire order each inning. This division serves as an introduction to baseball with teams mostly formed based on the elementary school they attend (varies on participation). The purpose for this division is to introduce your child to the game of baseball and to have fun learning the basics of hitting, catching, throwing, and base running. All players will hit a safety ball from a hitting tee and do their best to make a play in the field. Score will not be kept during games and there will be no divisional winners or end of season tournament.

NOTE: Players that are league age 6 and already excel in throwing, fielding, and hitting a moving ball, may consider requesting the ability to play up to the Rookies division.

  • Practices typically start late March to early April. In general, teams will practice twice before the season begins and likely not after the season begins. Many teams will use the brief warmup time before the game to practice. The regular season consists of 12 games to be played at Simplot Sports Complex and will conclude near the time the traditional school year ends. Coaches are allowed on the field with the players during games to enable one on one coaching during game situations.

  • Teams are formed based on the elementary school your child attends. During registration, you may request to play with a friend/player from another school and/or a particular coach. Both parents must make the request to be validated. We do try to fulfill requests, but cannot guarantee that your request will be fulfilled.

  • Tee Ball is only offered in the spring season. There are no summer or fall seasons available through EBYBS.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

  • The following equipment is required for your child to participate in this division:

    • Tee Ball glove, typically 8.5" to 10", soft leather recommended
    • Plastic molded baseball cleats
    • Tee Ball bat (optional), USSSA 1.15 BPF, 2-1/4" barrel diameter
    • Baseball pants, style per the recommendation of your child's coach

EBYBS will provide your coach with helmets and safety balls for the team, along with hats and jerseys for each player.

SKILLS DEVELOPED IN Tee BALL

Coaches at this level have little to no experience in coaching. EBYBS will give each coach a guide instructing them on how to help your child develop these skills. If you are able to assist your team's coach in his or her quest to help the team develop these skills, then please do so. At the very least, please have patience with these coaches as they begin their endeavor into coaching youth sports. This league runs entirely on volunteers so the true strength of the league comes from parents stepping up to contribute in any way they can. Not every child will be able to perform these skills at the Tee Ball level by the end of the regular season. We suggest working with your child at home to help them develop these skills so they are prepared to move on to the next division.

    • Basics of throwing with their glove side in a straight line towards the target.
    • Ability to try and catch the ball with their glove starting at a 10 to 12 foot distance and increasing distance when possible. Practicing accuracy over distance.
    • Knowledge of how to position glove based on location of the throw (above waist, at waist, below waist).
    • Basics of a proper batting stance. Their feet square to the plate, about shoulder width apart, knees bent, their hands around shoulder height and slightly back, elbows relaxed, and their knuckles in line.
    • Coaches will emphasize a level swing through the strike zone. The hitting tee will be setup so they can practice a level swing about waist high.
    • Understanding of how to use their hips and turn their back foot to assist in their swing rather than just using their arms to swing. This will help to teach them to generate more power as they move on to other divisions.
    • Basics of a proper stance for fielding a ground ball. Their feet a little wider than shoulder width apart, with their butt down, eyes focused on the ball, and their glove and throwing hand down while slightly forward, ready to receive the ball.
    • Knowledge on ways to get outs during games. Fielding balls and throwing to a base, touching the base while holding the ball, or tagging a runner.
    • Knowledge on the proper sequence of base running (home to first, first to second, second to third, third to home).
    • Knowledge that they need to run to the base and stop to avoid being tagged out by the defense.
