It's How You Play the Game!

Enriching The Parent & Player Experience

Enriching the Parent & Player Experience

As we sit back and look at what makes a great season, it’s not always about the game itself.  Instead, it’s the bond that is formed among the team that translates into better teamwork and the lifelong friendships formed among both players and parents.  We know that the Age Group Mandate brought with it significant changes to a number of teams this year.  Because of this, the Parent Advisory Panel wants to provide parents with ideas for bringing teams together off the field and creating new bonds among players and their families.

  • Fundraising is a great way to ensure that everyone on the team has the ability to participate fully in all activities and ease the financial burden on parents so the focus of paid tournaments or events can be on the FUN.  Popular examples of fundraising ideas along with helpful tips include:

    • Car Wash - “How to Run a Successful Car Wash Fundraiser” by Lance Winslow III can be found at:  http://www.carwashguys.com/fundraisers/LAschools.html

    • Garage Sale - “Secrets to Hosting a Successful MoneyMaking Fundraiser Garage Sale” by Mary Sigmann, CPO can be found at:  http://www.organizer-coach.com/secret-garage-sale.pdf

    • Restaurant Night - Match the need that everyone has to eat with an opportunity to earn money from the profits of a local restaurant and you have a win-win situation.  Many restaurants will share 10-20% of total sales with your organization. Simply set up a night with the restaurant and get as many people to visit that particular restaurant on the designated date.

  • Sporting Events can be a great way for teams to cheer on their favorite teams while relaxing and having fun.  Observing other teams at play also changes a player’s view of the game, allowing them to see opportunities they may not see while on the field themselves.

    • St. Vrain FC Teams - This is a great opportunity for teams within the club to support each other by organizing time to go watch another team in the club.  On the competitive side, mix it up by planning for the boys and girls counterpart teams to go and support each other one weekend.

    • Colorado Rapids - Group ticket sales and opportunities to get teams on the field can be found at:  http://www.coloradorapids.com/tickets/grouptickets

    • Local Universities - Visit the individual University for both Men’s and Women’s Soccer Schedules and Ticketing Info.  This could also be combined with working as a ball girl/boy if opportunities are available.

    • Local High Schools - Visit the high school website for schedules and locations.  This could also be combined with working as a ball girl/boy if opportunities are available.

  • Social Events and outings can be another way for team members to get to know each other off the field and identify similar interests outside of soccer among their teammates.

    • Local Events:  http://www.timescall.com/events/things-to-do/

    • Pool Party at a local pool

    • Meet up at a local rec center

    • Parent-hosted barbeque

    • Informal games at park

      • Kids vs. Coaches

      • Capture the Flag

      • Water balloon fight

      • Team competitions mixing kids into small groups of players that don’t know each other as well

  • Soccer opportunities can provide players with more time with the ball and the chance to strengthen friendships outside the practice and game environment.

    • Summer Camps - Making arrangements for teammates to attend a local camp together allows youth athletes to strengthen their skills and grow together.  Many local camps are available and hosted by St. Vrain FC, Longmont Indoor Soccer, Coerver, Longmont Recreation, Dawson School, University of Colorado, University of Denver, and Air Force Academy just to name a few.

    • Summer 3 v 3 or 5 v 5 tournaments

    • Early season recreational tournaments

    • Parent or Coach organized informal scrimmages against each other or another team.  Could also be combined with rental of Longmont Indoor Soccer for a small per person fee during inclement weather.
