This curriculum is designed to be accessible to all levels of AYSO referees. It follows along with Team3's 2016 program focused on Teamwork from the AR's Perspective. This means that your local Team3 referees are great resources. You can also reference the year's Play of the Fortnight series and recorded Focus Discussions.
There are 8 topics or weeks; each is designed to work as a 30 minute clinic that can be held at a field.
Week 1 - The Basics
Discussion:
- The flag when not in play - furled
- The flag when in play - unfurled and visible to referee
- Throw-Ins (see Guide to Procedures pg. 16-17)
- Emphasize teamwork
- For new referees, point out that this is a low-stress situation. Take a breath and get it right.
Activities:
- ARs practice keeping the flag furled until they are given an activity. Lead by example.
Goal: learn to keep the flag furled at the appropriate times.
- ARs walk, jog, and side-step up and down touch line while holding the flag visible to the referee. Have a volunteer pose as the referee.
Goal: get comfortable with the habit of keeping the flag visible to the referee.
- Pair referee/AR teams and stand behind one then the other. point direction for a throw-in and guide the referees on how to work together to get the right call.
Goal: Learn the teamwork required to correctly signal thrown-ins.
Week 2 - The Goal Line
Discussion:
- Ask what situations make it critical to be in exactly the right place as an AR.
Good answers: offside decisions, goal line decisions, edge of penalty area decisions, etc.
- Why are goal line decisions so critical?
It's critical to the match; the AR must be in the right place to get the call right.
Activities:
- Stage an attacker, a defender, and a goal-keeper on a field
- Simulate the ball going out for goal kicks and corner kicks. Demonstrate proper mechanics per Guide to Procedures pg 20 and 23-34, then move to the proper position for the restart depending on the staged players. Give ARs practice.
Goal: get ARs comfortable with always following play, the second-last defender, and the ball to the goal line. Reaffirm proper GK/CK mechanics.
- Simulate an obvious goal. Practice proper signaling of goals scored.
Goal: become familiar with proper goal signaling mechanics per Guide to Procedures Pg 25-26. TLC will be addressed later.
- [Advanced] Simulate less obvious goal/no-goal situations. Practice proper signaling and teamwork per Guide to Procedures pg 27.
Goal: emphasize the importance of being at the goal line for these decisions and their unpredictable nature. Equip referees with the necessary mechanics to communicate.
