Monte Cassino Basketball Teams Have Successful State Tournament Run!

The Saints had the opportunity to compete in the diocese state tournament March 2 – 4, 2018 in Oklahoma City, OK. We had 6th - 8th grade girls and boys teams all representing Monte Cassino School. The 6th grade girls started slow with a lost Friday night to Elizabeth Seton but bounced back Saturday morning by defeating Cascia White. The 6th girls defeated Cascia blue to make it to the consolation final before losing to Elizabeth Seton for a second time on the weekend. The 7th grade girls defeat Westminster but lost to John Carrol which set them up to play St. Mary’s for a chance at the consolation championship which they won. They played a great game against All saints in the championship but came up short. The 8th grade boys start off fast by defeating Elizabeth Seton before losing a close game to St. Pius. They defeated Marquette (Red) for a chance to play against St. Mary’s in the 5th place game but came up short.

The 6th grade boys which is coached by Ryan Devers had a great showing on the weekend. The up – tempo style that they play is one that keeps opponents on their toes and defense and very hesitate on offense. They defeated Elizabeth Seton, Christ the King (Maroon), and Westminster to get to the championship game. They played Christ the King gold very close but was not able to pull away.  The 6th grade boys were crowned State Runner – Up.

The 8th grade girls came into this state tournament having won the tournament two previous years and this year it wouldn’t be easy to defend the title from last year. They won the first two games against Elizabeth Seton and Westminster.  The 8th Girls advance to the finals to face a tough St. Eugene team. The game went back and forth but the Saints would pull away to win the their third straight State Championship!
