Everything You Need to Know about Twins Player Placement Process

PLAYER PLACEMENT PROCESS

We are excited to announce our Player Placement Process (PPP), a year-long process that our Soccer Staff utilizes to ensure that all Twins players are placed in an appropriate environment that enhances their success and overall development.

For players currently playing in a Twins Competitive Program, the PPP will consist of three important phases throughout the year:

  1. Twins Coaches / Twins Directors Year-round Communication: Throughout the course of the year, Twins Age Group Directors monitor the development of all players in their given age group and receive feedback from the coaches of each team. Coaches are tasked with submitting team assessments to their Age Group Director, and we have found this to be a very useful tool in evaluating our players.
  2. Fall and Spring End of Season Meetings with Twins Players: At the end of each fall and spring season, each Twins player has the opportunity to meet with their coach to receive feedback in the form of a formal evaluation. These meetings are not only intended to assist with immediate player development, but also to help the players understand where they are in the bigger picture within their age group.
  3. Tryouts: All players, whether current Twins players or new to our club, will participate in a two-day tryout with Twins coaches and Directors. Going into the tryouts, our Soccer Staff will have had lengthy discussions about the relative quality of players in the age group. The tryouts act as the final component of our PPP and are both used to compare returning players to any new players who attend the tryout sessions and to compare again, current Twins players against each other. Therefore we strongly recommend that players, returning and new, attend each tryout session to give themselves the best opportunity to be evaluated against all of their peers.
For players currently playing in the Twins Recreation program, our Open House and Clinic dates during the spring season are great opportunities to be seen by Twins Coaches and Directors before tryouts begin.

For players who are new to Twins, you must attend the scheduled tryout sessions for your age group. As we do not have the luxury of seeing you for the entirety of the previous season, it is important that you attend both sessions!

Our staff feels that seeing the players at Tryouts playing with their entire age group is an important piece to the formation of teams, however it is not the only factor that should be taken into account. The PPP monitors the development of each player throughout the course of the year and allows us to make complete and informed decisions based on their performances in training, league / tournament play, and their two-day tryout.

TRYOUT PROCESS

Junior Academy
Player Placement for the 8U-10U Junior Academy and Elite Academy program is set up to provide parents an honest evaluation of whether the coaching staff feels that their child is better suited in the Elite Academy, Junior Academy or Recreation program.

Tryout: held over two nights with each session being roughly an hour in length

Evaluators: TCYSA Full-Time Directors of Coaching and current Junior Academy Coaching staff

The tryout process is conducted in a relaxed environment whereby players are encouraged to play the game they love and have fun. This is done to ensure players are not intimidated or "fear" not making a team.

The coaching staff evaluates each player in a few simple ways:

  • Psychological - "Do they want to be here?" and "Are they mature enough for this environment?"
  • Technical- "Do they try to receive the ball?" and "Do they have a purpose for the ball when they play it?"
  • Physical - "Can they compete physically with the players around them?" and "Do they have a good level of coordination?"

Player Selection: The number of players selected will be determined by the quality of the player pool.  The top group of players on the boys and girls side will be invited to participate in the 10U Elite Academy.

Select & Classic
Tryouts are open to all in the 11U-19U age groups and are conducted by the Directors of Coaching and TCYSA’s professional coaching staff. Players are evaluated over two nights to determine the most appropriate placement for each player. Each tryout session lasts 90 minutes.

Evaluators: TCYSA Full-Time Directors of Coaching and TCYSA’s staff coaches

How Players Are Placed: Each player that attends the tryout session is evaluated in four different areas: technical, tactical, physical and psychological. For those returning players, evaluations over the course of season/year is combined with their performance during the tryout session to form the fairest assessment possible. New players are encouraged to relax and enjoy playing, and will receive a fair, objective
placement.

TEAM SELECTION

Classic
Players are grouped together with the purpose of creating highly competitive teams. This allows players to be placed at developmentally appropriate levels. There will typically be between 1-4 teams in each age group depending on the number of players, with the Green team being the 1st team and the Blue, Grey and White teams being the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th teams respectively. Players that are not selected for a classic team will be offered the opportunity to be considered for a select team.

Select
The number of teams formed in the Select Division is based on the quality and number of players available. If there are enough suitable players to create two or more teams then every effort is made to create parity between them.

FOLLOWING PLAYER PLACEMENT

Acceptance
Acceptance by a player and his/her family is considered binding, and each player/family is expected to make a commitment to their respective program for its duration (season/year).

This commitment includes, but is not limited to:

• Filling a roster spot on a team for the entire year
• Fulfilling all training, game, and financial commitments

Shortly after the completion of an age group’s tryouts, selected players will be invited to join a team. Players are expected to make a decision whether to join a team within 24 hours, and acceptance must be completed online. Part of the acceptance is payment of the acceptance fee. This payment is not an extra fee, but rather the first installment of the player’s total TCYSA fees. Once this acceptance is made, the player and his or her family are committed to the team and the Club for the entire playing year and are expected to fulfill all training, game, and financial commitments.

Players selected for a team will be notified by e-mail. And it is very important that the parents read the information carefully.

Players and their families will be required to attend a Meet the Team event, Twins Night.  This important event allows teams to organize and convey essential information to families before summer vacations start.

Non-Acceptances: If a player chooses not to accept his/her spot on a team, written notification must be given to TCYSA. E-mails can be sent to [email protected] with “non-acceptance” in the subject line.

After decisions are made by staff regarding a player’s placement, any questions regarding feedback about your player should be emailed to [email protected]. A response will be sent with feedback within seven days.  The staff cannot guarantee feedback earlier than seven days from the last tryout date and will not be able to respond by phone during that seven-day period due to the time commitment of the placement process.

MISCELLANEOUS

Vacancies: Players are expected to make a one-year commitment to their respective teams and to the organization. In instances in which a team loses a player, through either injury or family relocation, coaches may add players. Vacancies may be filled and transfers may occur at the discretion of the TCYSA Directors of Coaching.

New Players: Any new player wishing to join TCYSA after the Player Placement period ends or during the regular season must contact the appropriate Director of Coaching to discuss eligibility and to arrange a supplemental Player Placement. All required registration materials must be completed and fees paid prior to a player’s placement session. The Directors of Coaching will make all decisions regarding new players and player placement.

Transfers: The Directors of Coaching staff may transfer a player between teams during the seasonal year.
