Philip Stravalli Midget Award Recipients

Memories of Philip Stravalli…

Philip Stravalli played for the Blue Devils in 1967 and 1968 as a punter and wide receiver. Nicknamed “Crazy Legs” by his teammates due to his awkward but speedy gait there was no player who worked harder on the field for the Blue Devils.

Stravalli was not a starter for his team but that did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm for the game. On one occasion Coach Jim Bell surprised Philip by putting him in a game earlier than expected. Crazy Legs hit the field running, only to realize in the huddle that Coach Bell called a timeout, for Crazy Legs had neglected to put on his helmet, such was his excitement for the game. Philip was not the best player on the field no one, however, felt more pride to represent the Blue Devils.

After losing his father at a young age Philip needed a father figure and found the direction he needed in Jim Bell, Bobby Russell, John Ferrante, and Chris DeLucia, all Blue Devil coaches. Unfortunately Philip became ill himself in the late 1970’s and near the end focused on his time playing for the Blue Devils, the teamwork, camaraderie, hard work, and happy times. From the first time Phil put on the Blue and Gold he was a Blue Devil for life.

It is in the spirit of this fine young man, gone too soon, to whom this award is dedicated.
