Learn More About Oak-Griner Youth Baseball

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the Oak-Griner League.

1. When are the games?

Games are on Monday and Thursday nights. There are never games on Sunday or Wednesday (to avoid conflicting with church). We almost never have games on Tuesday, Friday, or Saturday (unless it is a make-up game scheduled by coaches with the approval of the parents/guardians).

See "Team Central." Each team has a web site and schedule posted.

2. What is the cost?
It's about $90 per child. That includes a personalized uniform with cap, shirt, pants, and socks.

There are discounts for multiple children. Also, there are some scholarships available.

3. How many teams are there?
Most of our divisions have three or four teams. The Spring 2015 Majors had four teams and Minors has three teams.

4. Will my child play every game?
Yes! The League rule is no child sits more than two innings straight during a game, which are typically three to six innings.

5. How competitive is the league?
It's more about sportsmanship and fun than winning and losing. Players and coaches encourage the opposing team. The spectators encourage all the players and cheer them on when they make a good play or try hard.

6. What does my child need to bring?
It's good to have a glove, bat, and batting helmet. But the League sometimes has equipment that you can borrow.

7. Who runs the League?
Volunteers from Oak-Griner Baptist Church. They love baseball and softball and are thrilled to provide a wholesome family League for the community.

8. Do I need to sign a legal waiver for my child to play?
Yes. All players must have a legal waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

9. Does my child need a physical?
No.

10. When do we need to be there before a game?
Most coaches ask for players to be there 15 to 30 minutes before a game, so they can warm up.

11. Are there practices outside of games?
That's up to each coach. But there usually aren't many extra practices scheduled once the season starts.

12. We don’t go to church. Are we welcome?
Yes! The League is about having fun playing baseball and softball. It also is about building the character of the players.

If you don't have a church, you're welcome at Oak-Griner Baptist Church.

13. Is my child going to be constantly preached at?
No, but we do pray before each game and often after games as well.

14. Should we bring our own chairs?
There are wooden bleachers at each field, but many spectators bring lawn chairs.

15. Do the players need to bring drinks/snacks?
Some teams, usually the younger players, have a snack after each game. The Team Mom will let you know.

16. Do you have a concession stand?
Yes! We have low-priced cold drinks, water, coffee, hot chocolate, french fries, hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, candy, and more. Sales benefit the Oak-Griner Youth Baseball league and help us pay for maintenance on the fields.

17. Do players get trophies at the end of the season?
Usually, the teams play for a "championship" in their division. All of the players get trophies or medals.
