OrthoIndy
and Westfield Youth Sports take your Childs health very seriously. For this reason, OrthoIndy has partnered with St. Vincent Sports Performance (SVSP) to offer the ImPact Concussion Baseline Testing free of charge to 5th and 6th grade (2019-20 school year) athletes participating in WYSI athletics.

Testing will occur on June 25 and July 11. All eligible members are required to register for one of the available sessions (see details below).

ImPact is a validated computerized concussion evaluation system. Baseline tests measure reaction time, memory capacity, speed of mental processing and executive functioning of the brain. ImPACT baseline results can be used as part of the evaluation, if your child sustains a head injury resulting in a concussion. The testing gives physicians a "baseline" of how your child's brain functions prior to a head injury. Knowing this information can assist in planning an effective rehabilitation program.

Testing will be conducted by Stacie Feltz, the Concussion Program Coordinator and Certified/Licensed Athletic Trainer for St. Vincent Sports Performance.

FAQ / Important Details

How long is the ImPACT test valid?
Baseline testing information is valid for 2 years. It is NOT recommended for an athlete to have a new test more than 1 time in a 2 year period.

Who is eligible for WYSI ImPACT Baseline concussion testing program?
All 5th & 6th grade (2018-19 school year) WYSI athletes. Athletes must be 10 years of age or older to take the test.

How long does the ImPACT test take?
The testing will take approximately 45-50 minutes. It is a non-invasive "video-gaming" format that measures 1) attention span, 2) working memory, 3) sustained and selective attention time, 4) response variability, 5) non-verbal solving, 6) reaction time.

What to bring to the ImPact Testing?
If your child takes ADD/ADHD medicine, we suggest they have it on the day of testing so that they can sit still and focus as to not interrupt or disturb other test takers.

Send a list of ANY medication that your child may be taking at the time. This includes: allergy medicine, acne medicine, narcotics, anti-depressants, antibiotics, etc.
If your child wears glasses, make sure they have them present.

What to do if you suspect your child has a concussion?
If your child exhibits signs or symptoms of a concussion, you may contact Stacie Feltz for further instruction, initial evaluation and referral to a physician trained in assessing concussions. SVSP recommends physicians certified by Athletes Concussion Alliance, as they are trained to retest and interpret the results.
