CMVL Q&A

This page will be updated throughout the season to help explain questions that you might have regarding rules for CMVL.  Please send any questions you have to your parish/school Coordinator and they will ensure we get it answered and updated on this page.

Some Initial Questions:

  • Question:  When there is a question regarding the scores, how should this be handled?  Can the coach directly ask the scorer's table?
  • Answer:  The Head Coach should ask the referee - That way the referee can stop the game.  A coach should not address the table directly as the teams might be playing and the scorer would not be paying attention.   Normally, if it is between points, the coach would not get in trouble if they are at the table asking (however, coaches are not supposed to be inside the 10 foot line).  Most referees are going to tell you to ask the scorer anyway, but the key is for the referee to know what is going on and to stop play while it is going on.

  • Question:  I have heard the term "match", "game" and "set" used interchangeably.  What should it be?
  • Answer:  In CMVL and all voleyball, when Team 1 plays Team 2, that is called a "match".   A match is the best of 2 out of 3 "sets".

  • Question:  Do we always start a match with a prayer circle?  Even if it is not the first match of the day?
  • Answer:  Yes.

  • Question:  How high is the net?
  • Answer:  Net height for CMVL is 7' 4 1/8".  The official height measurement is made in the center of the net. The height of the net at the sidelines can be no more than 3/4" higher than the official height.

  • Question:  We have heard that the ball should only be thrown under the net when being given to another team.  Is this true?
  • Answer:  Yes, we want to teach our players never to throw the ball over the net to the opposing side during warm ups, loss of serve, etc.   It is a courtesy and done primarily for player safety.  However, some referees really get annoyed (& could hold it against you), if they see players/coaches doing this.

  • Question:  We had a player that just had her ears pierced.  She had to remove her earing before she was able to play.  Is this necessary?
  • Answer:  Absolutely.  We get this every year and have to abide by the rules for both CMVL and High School Volleyball.

  • Question:  What do all the Referee signals mean?   Is there somewhere we can learn about that?
  • Answer:  You asked for it - and you can find information on the Ref's signals <>.

  • Question:  Do the teams always switch sides after a game?  It seems that some teams switch after the game, while others don't...
  • Answer:  The teams should exchange sides after the first/second match (game), but this may not be needed during the third match, depending on the choices after the coin toss for the third match.  (For the coin flip, the Team Captains will decide to Serve/Receive and which side to play.)

  • Question:  I have heard the term "match", "game" and "set" used interchangeably.  What should it be?
  • Answer:  In CMVL and all voleyball, when Team 1 plays Team 2, that is called a "match".   A match is the best of 2 out of 3 "sets".
