Thunder win Campton Tournament

The Hoffman United Thunder finished on top of a ten-team U13 division at the Campton United Midwest Cup on Memorial Day weekend.

The girls started group play on Friday night with a 3-1 victory over NSA Blast. They dominated their competition in the remaining two games against Rockford Raptors and Valladolid USA on Saturday and Sunday, with shutouts by goalkeepers Sam, Ashley, and Christina. They finished comfortably on top of their bracket to advance to the playoff stage.

On Monday morning, Thunder faced Elgin Kickers in a dramatic semifinal match. Avery opened the scoring, but Kickers came back to equalize late in the first half. Thunder regained the lead with a goal by Brisa, followed by several near misses as Thunder kept the ball in the attacking end for much of the second half. Kickers were awarded a free kick late in the game, which they capitalized on to tie the score at 2-2. Isabella H. sent Thunder to the championship match with a gorgeous 30-yard shot that sailed over the Kickers keeper in injury time.

Thunder came out rumbling from the opening whistle in the championship against TCSA Tigers with a goal in the first minute by Avery, followed by two more goals by Rose and Avery. They enjoyed a 3-0 lead for the remainder of the first half. The Tigers did not give up, however, closing the gap to 3-2 in the second half to set up another thrilling finish. Thunder would not relinquish their advantage, with goals from Emina, Jasmine, and Gabby sealing a 6-3 victory.

The girls could very well earn another title on June 5, where a win or tie against Valladolid would clinch the IWSL U13 BNW division. Their success is well deserved.
