It's How You Play the Game!

Volunteer Rec Coaching Information

Note from the Director:

Coach,

Thank you for volunteering to coach for this upcoming soccer season.  You are now part of a team of roughly 200 coaches.  Though we will be competing against each other, we are all on the same team.  Our coaching culture at Real Colorado has been built on respect and cooperation where coaches are friendly and helpful with one another as we all help to make sure the soccer experience is a positive one centered on the players.

I encourage you on each game day to introduce yourself to your opposing Real Colorado coach.  Chances are you have similar challenges and successes, and your experiences can help each other regardless of your coaching or soccer background.

I want to help make your coaching experience as positive for you as it is for the kids.  Please use our time and experience in soccer as a resource for your season’s success.  You will also find helpful information below that can aid you in the coaching process.   The important dates document lists meetings and clinics where we will add additional information for the season.

I look forward to working with you, and helping in any way we can.

Laws of the Game:
All In-House Rules and Regulations are covered in our Laws of the Game. Please keep this on hand for reference. Laws of the Game are HERE.

Code of Conduct:
Real Colorado has created a code of conduct to help maintain a culture of safety, respect, and sportsmanship. Please review our Code of Conduct for coaches, players and spectators HERE.

CSA Standards of Play:
We mold our In-House Recreational program after Colorado Soccer Associations Standards of Play. Our U9/10 age group play 7v7 and U11-U15 play 9v9

Reschudule Procedure:
Any instance where games are cancelled due to weather, or you need to cancel and reschedule a game, please follow the steps outlined in out reschedule procedure (emailed to coaches and shared at preseason meetings)

Time Commitment:
Our In-House Teams, play one game per week, and practice 1-2 times a week for practice time depending on age group.   At the U4-U6 levels, coaches host 1 practice per week and the duration depends on your team.  Some teams can handle an hour; others are done at 45 minutes.  Games are on Saturdays with the kids playing 3v3 without a ref.  Coaches are permitted on the field during the game to “referee.” U7-8 games play 5v5 without referees and now have a goalkeeper.  Our U9-U15 teams normally practice 1-2 times per week for an hour. Games are on Saturday, and officiated by a referee.

Team Personnel:
With your individual team, it is important to create a helpful team culture, and having help form other parents can achieve this culture.  An example is having 2 coaches.  This way you can have one of you coach the game while the other handles the bench and substitutions.  Having a team parent is another helpful role.  The team parent may help with communication through your team-page and help eliminate workload as well as organizing snacks, possible team events, or even an end of season gathering or team-gift.  These optional roles have assisted other coaches to create a greater team environment.  Most parents want to help and be involved, but likely won’t know what to do.  Be clear in your communication as to what you need.

Requirements:
Although it helps to have a soccer coaching background it is certainly not needed.  The most important characteristics of a great youth soccer coach are:
1.) Positive attitude
2.) Ability to connect with children
3.) Enthusiasm
4.) Good sense of humor
5.) Able to pass a background check
If you possess these traits, we will give you everything else you could need to have a great season.

Our Expectations:
We expect all of our coaches to provide a safe, positive environment where their players can learn, grow, and have fun playing soccer.  We do not keep score in our In-House League, and success is measured in much more than wins and losses.  We want our coaches to teach players the values of competing, giving their best, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

We Provide:
All of our volunteer coaches receive ample coaching education resources.  Whether you have been playing soccer your entire life, or you are brand new to the sport, we provide you with everything you need to succeed.  You will receive an age appropriate curriculum filled with activities, and all of your practices already planned for you.  We offer multiple coaches clinics both before and during the season to help you prepare for the fun challenges of coaching young children.  Every coach also receives a bag of balls, cones, etc., though every player is encouraged to bring their own ball to practice.

Education:
At Real Colorado we want to support all coaches in their continuing education through United States Soccer Federation (USSF), United Soccer Coaches (USC), etc.  We host various professional coaching courses over the calendar year.  Coaches who attend and successfully complete these courses are reimbursed their registration fees by Real Colorado.

Gift:
As a thank you for your time and efforts, we provide every coach with a Thank You gift near the end of each season.
