Welcome to Solomons Steelers 2016 Cheerleading Season

Our goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for your children.  We teach the basic fundamentals of cheerleading and more advanced techniques as they progress.  We promote good sportsmanship between teammates, parents, and spectators at all times.   

Our season runs from August 1st through mid-November.  Cheerleaders perform at weekly football games and may participate in 1 or 2 competitions.  Competing in any competition is optional.  

Please respect the coaches and other cheerleaders by being on time for practices and games.  It is your responsibility to contact the coach if you are going to be late or not attend an event so the coaches can prepare accordingly.  

Practice:

Important Note: In order to be ready for a full week of practice we will have a meet and greet on Monday, August 1st at Cove Point Park starting at 6:00pm.  Please come out to meet the coaches, go over expectations for the season, receive individual squad information, complete administrative paperwork, and order your cheer items.  The official start of cheer practice for all squads is Monday, August 1st.  Cheer practices will be held at Cove Point Park field 2, usually starting at 6:00pm.  The practice schedule will be determined by your coach and may vary per squad. During the summer before school begins cheer squads practice 3 to 4 nights a week, with the exception of flag they practice 2 nights a week.  Starting in October cheer practice will move inside and drop down to 2 nights a week.  School locations are assigned by Calvert County Parks and Recreation.  Parents will be informed of inside practice locations once they are assigned.

Games:

Game schedules are determined by the league presidents.  Once the schedule is set and made available to the coaches one will be given to the parents.   Most games are held on Saturdays with a few on Wednesday night.  Cheerleaders are expected to arrive at the field early to run through cheers and prepare for halftime.  Your coach will inform you of the arrival time.

Uniforms:

Cheer uniforms will be provided by the league to borrow throughout the current season.  ALL uniforms (shell and skirt) must be returned at the end of the season or at the time a cheerleader decides not to continue in the program.  The parent is responsible for the upkeep of the uniform until it is returned to the league.  A uniform deposit fee of $100 is required at the time the uniform is issued.  The deposit fee will be returned to the parent once the uniform is returned cleaned and undamaged.  If the uniform is not returned or it’s damaged beyond repair your check will be cashed in order to replace the damaged uniform.

Cheer Shoes

Cheer orders will be taken at all on-site registrations and throughout the first week of practice.  All white no-show socks will be purchased by the parents all other items will be ordered through the league.  Samples will be available to help with sizing.  We also have OPTIONAL cheer items available to order.

Parent or Cheerleader Concerns:

Please speak with your coach first if you have an issue or concern and then the cheer commissioner, Monique Johnson.  If it’s not resolved at that level, please feel free to contact our Executive Director.  Their contact information can be found on the Solomons Steelers website at www.solomonssteelers.net. We are a non-profit organization that is run by parent volunteers.  If you’re interested in volunteering in any capacity please let me know.  We’re always looking for more volunteers.  

Parents, friends, family members and all spectators are NOT permitted on the fields during practice or while games are going on.  If you go beyond the designated area you will be asked to move back.  This is for the safety of our cheerleaders, football players, and yourself.
