Lifeguard Certification Class

Prerequisites   

·         Must be at least 16 years old (15 years old with Sweetwater approval) prior to the first day of the class.

·         Swim 300 yards continuously using freestyle, breaststroke, modified freestyle, or modified breaststoke

·         Swim 50 yards with a rescue tube using either modified freestyle or modified breaststroke

·         Tread water for 1 minute using only the legs.  Hands must be out of the water

·         Retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the deep end, surface, and then swim 10 yards on your back, while holding the object on your chest.

Purpose:

·         The purpose of the StarGuard Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This class is offered both online and with instructor-led skill sessions.

Certification Requirements:

·         Attend all class sessions, must score 80% or better on a written exam, pass a technical performance and simulation practical exam. Must pass each of the five Starguard® safety training and aquatic rescues which include prevention, surveillance, managing a conscious victim, managing an unconscious victim, and professionalism and personal safety.

Certification Validity:

·         The certification is valid for one year. Included in the curriculum is CPR/AED and first aid training. Competency and performance must be assessed annually for renewals.

Length of Class:

·         This is a blended learning course utilizing an online, self-study section and the hands on, practical section.

·         Online self-study, about 10 hours

·         Hands on, practical section 16 hours

Re-Certification Class

·         Must have a current StarGuard, Red Cross, Ellis, or YMCA certification.

·         Swim 300 yards continuously using freestyle, breaststroke, modified freestyle, or modified breaststoke

·         Swim 50 yards with a rescue tube using either modified freestyle or modified breaststroke

·         Tread water for 1 minute using only the legs.  Hands must be out of the water

·         Retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the deep end, surface, and then swim 10 yards on your back, while holding the object on your chest.

Purpose:

The purpose of a review course is to give individuals the opportunity to review the course content within a formal class setting. The format optimizes a participant’s ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skills evaluations. The responsibility for preparing for the final written exam is shared by the instructor and the participant.

Certification Requirements:

§  Attend the entire course.

§  Participate in all skill sessions and scenarios.

§  Demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios.

§  Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent

Certification Validity:

Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers: 1 year

Length of Class:

Approximately 8 hours
