League Age Determination Date

Little League International changed the date used to determine a player's league age for the 2016 season. Find an explanation for the change here.

For players born on or before April 30, 2005: For the 2016 and 2017 seasons, these players will use the April 30 age determination date. A new age determination date of August 31 will be effective starting with the 2018 season.

For players born between May 1, 2005 and August 31, 2005: For the 2016, 2017, 2018 season, these players will use the April 30 age determination date. A new age determination date of August 31 will be effective starting with the 2019 Little League Baseball Season.

For players born on or after September 1, 2005: The August 31 age determination date will be effective immediately, starting with the 2016 season. This was the implementation used for the 2015 season, with players turning 4 to 9 years old during the 2015 calendar year to use the December 31 age determination date. That implementation remains in place, except instead of using December 31, you will use August 31.

Division Guidelines

As a general rule, kids will play in the divisions based on their age (see age chart below). It's quite common for players to remain in a lower division another year to develop additional skills before moving up. On rare occasions, if a player is highly skilled, it is appropriate to have them evaluated for early promotion. Register for your preferred division (below), however please note that registering for a division is not a guarantee the player will play in that division. The final choice to move a player up early or retain them for another season will be made by the player agent(s) and will be based on many factors, such as player experience, skills, and availability.

The division structure for the 2016 Spring season, as formally adopted by the Board at its meetings on November 12, 2015 and December 18, 2015, is as follows:

  • Bubba Ball:  league age 4 and first-time 5s
  • T-Ball:  league age 5 - 6, 4s may be allowed based on ability and maturity
  • Farm (Minor):
    • A (Rookies):  league age 7 - 8, 6s may be allowed with one prior year of T-Ball and demonstrated skills; machine/coach pitch
    • AA:  league age 8 - 9, 10s may be included based on tryout; kid pitch and local TOC
    • AAA:  league age 9 - 10 and some 11s based on tryout; includes local and District TOC, 9-10 All Stars derived from Farm system
  • Intermediate:  league age 11 - 13, includes All Stars through potentially the Intermediate World Series

Bat rules for Intermediates

From the 2015 Little League rulebook:  Intermediates does not allow full composite bats or half-and-half bats with composite barrel (composite handle with aluminum barrel is ok) of any kind unless they are BBCOR. Wood is fine. Kids may swing big barrels up to 2-5/8, and can also use traditional narrow 2-1/4 bats as long as they are not composite.

Intermediate bat rules should save families lots of money, since the composites tend to be pretty expensive. The game should be safer too, with the wood/BBCOR or non-composite barrels lessening the speed off the bat.

HEADS UP! Significant bat rule changes coming in 2018

Little League International announced in August that it will be formally adopting USA Baseball's new standard for bat performance testing. The announcement says, "For more than seventy-five years, Little League has used improvements in science, engineering, and technology to take the sport of baseball to higher levels. By utilizing the most current advancements available, manufacturers can now develop bats with a wood-like performance, which is important for the long-term success of the game." Based on the new bat regulations, the full composite bats and composite-barrel half-and-half bats used today will be illegal after 12/31/2017.
