SPARTAN LAX

History of North Springs High School Lacrosse

North Springs plays an important role in the history of Georgia High School Lacrosse. North Springs was the 10th high school in the state to add boys lacrosse in 2000. Ed Smith was the first coach.

In 2002 the state sanctioned official lacrosse play for both boys and girls. The early teams practiced at nearby elementary schools and fielded successful teams in spite of their limited funding and support.

Julie LaFramboise started the girls program at North Springs and the Spartans had the first player in Georgia to receive a lacrosse scholarship when Lindsay Deighton signed with Marist College. The girls lacrosse team at North Springs remained strong and won several state championships until coach LaFramboise left in 2008.
The boys team had early success but in the mid 2000’s struggled to get wins. From 2005 – 2009 the Spartans only won 12 games total. All that changed, however in 2010 when a strong group of seniors led by midfielder, Harry Baker combined with the first group of freshmen who arrived to high school with lacrosse experience from the newly formed Jr. Spartan feeder team created a year earlier by founder, Mark Baker. Mark Baker worked tirelessly to promote lacrosse in our area. From 2009 – 2012, 4 year starter Mick Baker tended goal and set national marks for career saves in his time in the goal. The 2010 Spartans made it to the state playoffs for the first time since 2002. Coach Bill Barbour’s team won 8 games before losing to Lovett in the playoffs that spring. Harry Baker would go on to play with Division 1 Mercer University and Mick Baker would play with the Piedmont College Lions.

The Jr. Spartans continued to feed experienced lacrosse players into the high school ranks over the next several years as Bill Barbour and Chad Plumly coached the more experienced team. Coach Paul Brown came in 2012 and brought a winning system. The team won 15 games in the two seasons that Brown coached including the record setting 2013 season in which the team set a record of 9 wins and shattered most offensive marks set by the previous 2010 playoff contenders. The 2013 team was the first North Springs team to finish with a winning record. Although the Spartans started a very young defense that year, Coach Asha Nelms got them into varsity shape quickly. Transfer Matt Johnson would join Eric Fancher, Matt Kontyko, and Steve King to form the most potent offensive unit in Spartan History in 2013.
