Skill Tags are here!

Our new Skill Tags are here!  Your player will be getting a bag tag presenting possible achievements in juggling, assists and goals.

We will be keeping track of these skills throughout the season and beyond, keeping a running total for all of our Miami West players.  As they earn achievements, their accomplishments will be honored with a new punch.  We'll be doing our best to keep this up to date and honor each statistic through game notes and video playback.  Please understand that these statistics are a way to keep the players motivated and pushing for better team play.  We will do our best as coaches to keep this as accurate as possible.

Juggling:

There is an adage in the game, "not all good jugglers are good soccer players but all good soccer players are good jugglers."  This season we will be expecting our players to able to juggle the ball 3,5,10 or more times.  Juggling is their ability to keep the ball off the ground and close to their body in a controlled fashion.  This is usually done off of the laces but can also incorporate the thighs, chest, head and heels.  Each week we'll give each player an opportunity before or after training to try for their achievement.  The ball must be kept close to their body, controlled and one of the coaches set up to count and record the event.  This is an objective accomplishment and determined by the coach keeping track.  The ball MUST be close and controlled.

Assists:

The focus this season is going to be on assists.  If we hope to move these boys into higher divisions, they need to focus on team play rather than individual showmanship.  We are going to be putting a lot of attention on the assists, crosses and the ball carrier this season.  You'll be hearing us repeat the following phrase, "the one who carries the ball is not the one who takes the shot."  As parents, please help us reinforce this mentality and praise your player for his assists and passing. Players who can pass and push for the assists will go much farther than the player who tries to do it all himself.  An assist will be considered a controlled pass to a teammate which results in a goal scored.  Every player on the field (including the keeper) can score an assist.

Goals:

Because there is no recordable assist without a finished goal, we'll be honoring this achievement as well.  Goals must be scored during league play or tournaments to count toward this achievement.

NOTE: We will also be keeping track of Goals Saved this season in our team statistics.  A Goal Saved is defined as any shot on target that would have been a goal for the opposing team if it were not stopped by a member of our team.  These can be achieved by both Keepers and on-field players.
