Whatcom FC Rangers: Selection Criteria

Whatcom Rangers FC: Selection Criteria

With try-outs on the horizon, I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss the process with everyone. Next month players within our club and region will be vying for positions within the club. This process will see players selected to Rangers teams and placed with other like-minded players of the same ability. Rangers coaches, neutral evaluators, and myself will be looking for players who show the potential to play at a competitive level against other clubs throughtout the state.

The try-out process will include a technical component, small-sided game (7v7),( 8v8) as well as a 11 v 11 match. Some try-outs may also include a Speed and Agility component as well. There are four main criteria we are looking for in players. They are:

"Technical"- Are players technically sound. Are they good technically when pressured by the opposition.

"Tactical"- Do they have good spatial awareness and understanding of the game. Do they understand their positional play on the team. Do they show good movement off the ball, to support their teammates.

"Soccer IQ"- Do they have a good understanding of the game in general. Make good decisions when in possession of the ball.

"Athleticism".- Do players posses the physical requirements needed to play at a competitive level.

As I've mentioned before, we appreciate that this current process of selecting player for teams has its flaws. For this reason we will thoroughly evaluate the entire try-out process in the future. Continuous assessment and year-round evaluations are true indications on where a player currently stands in the development pyramid. It's important that all players understand that they also play a major role in the development process, if they are to reach their full potential. Therefore get out and get as many touches on the ball from now until the try-outs begin. Remember its not where you start, but where you finish!

We look forward to seeing everyone out next month.

Keep the ball rolling....
