Game Recap - 4/9/14 @ Mets

Hard Work Pays Off for Rookie 2 Angels in 14-1 Victory Over the Mets

It was easy for everyone at the ballpark to see that hard work at practice had paid off for the Rookie 2 Angels on Wednesday, April 9th, as their bats came alive and the Angels jumped out to an early lead against the Mets, eventually capturing a 14-1 victory on Wednesday at Bailey Bridge.

Nine runs in the first three innings allowed the Angels to put the game away early, and five more in the fourth inning sealed the deal.

Jadon Hayes, Randy Richeson, Thomas Shaffer, and Ryan Marshall were all perfect at the plate, each going 3-for-3, contributing 12 of the team’s incredible 23 total hits.

Thomas Shaffer had two extra-base hits for the Angels, finishing with one RBI and two runs scored. He reached third base after absolutely launching a fly ball deep into left center over the outfielder’s head in the second inning, and then added an RBI double in the third, scoring Randy Richeson, and a hard ground-ball single in the fourth.

Ryan Marshall also flexed his muscles on offense, singling on a hard ground ball into right field to lead off the game, and then followed with an RBI single in the third inning, scoring Jadon Hayes. A line drive into right center in the fourth inning off of the Mets’ pitcher landed Ryan on third, scoring Riley Spawn. Ryan would finish with two RBI, scoring once.

Jadon Hayes’ bat and legs came alive as he went 3-for-3 at the plate, hustling down the basepath and beating the Mets’ defense time after time. Jadon scored in the second inning on Ryan’s single, and his hit into center field in the fourth sent Randy Richeson in for the team’s fifth run that inning. He also did work with his glove, making an unassisted put-out at first base on a grounder by the Mets in the second inning.

Randy Richeson put together a gem of a game on both sides of the field yet again, as he dominated on the mound in the fourth inning, only allowing one baserunner in 16 pitches. He helped himself in the fourth, fielding a grounder back to the mound and quickly firing a perfect throw to Ryan Marshall at first base for the easy out. Randy’s bat came up strong as usual, putting three line drives into the outfield grass. He scored twice, and his RBI single in the fourth knocked in Aiden Harlow.

After missing the team’s opening game against the Rays, the return of Logan Couture to the lineup was immediately felt, as he went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs in the process. Riley Spawn also rejoined the team with a big bang after being absent against the Rays, going 2-for-3, scoring twice. Riley added an RBI in the second inning, as he sent Logan across the plate with his single to shortstop.

Bryce Lotspeich was a silent hero for the Angels, sacrificing himself for an out at first base on an infield grounder in the second inning as Dominic Delaney snuck in for a run. He then not-so-silently smacked an infield single in the third inning to send Logan Couture home, which notched Bryce’s second RBI of the game.

Lucas Parham impressed his teammates, coaches, and opponents by toughing it out again after being hit in the hand by a baseball as he swung hard on a tough inside pitch. He continued to impress in the field on defense, as the Mets noticed his hustle and focus and were hesitant to hit the ball in his direction, knowing he was ready to make a play at any moment.

Dominic Delaney put the team on his back and lifted them up, contributing four of the team’s 14 total runs as he knocked in two RBI and scored twice himself. Dominic went 2-for-3, narrowly missing perfection at the plate as the Mets’ third baseman made a great catch on what might have been his third hit of the game.

Bruce Yanovitch was also robbed by the Mets’ defense in the top of the third inning, as their first baseman made an amazing sliding catch on Bruce’s pop-up in foul territory, but Bruce came back strong as he singled hard in the fourth inning, advancing Randy Richeson who would then score two batters later. The five-run limit rule went into effect that inning, unfortunately stranding Bruce on third base before he could cross home plate.

Leland McIntyre continued his dominance in the batter’s box as he went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring once and knocking in two RBI. His line drive single in the second inning advanced Ryan Marshall to second base and sent Riley Spawn across the plate for the fifth run, ending that inning. Leland followed with another line drive single in the fourth inning for another RBI, as Ryan scored from third on the play.

Aiden Harlow was a major contributor on both offense and defense, as he not only pounded an RBI double in the fourth inning, sending Leland across the plate, but also made two unassisted outs on defense at first base: a hard grounder in the first inning, and a fly ball in the third.

All in all, it was a fantastic outing for the Angels, who showed everybody at the park that they have what it takes to win this season. Continued 100% effort, focus, and solid teamwork will continue to project the Angels forward into a great year!
